Lesson Idea Name: The Life Cycle

Grade Level/Content Area: 2nd
Content Standard Addressed: S2L1: Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about
the life cycle of different living organisms
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and
be able to do by the end of this lesson:
Creative Communicator – Element 1.6.c
Students communicate complex ideas clearly The students will use a PowerPoint to
and effectively by creating or using a variety show/explain the life cycle of a plant through
of digital objects such as visualizations, pictures, audios, and descriptions. Students
models or simulations will be able to successfully use technology to
make the life cycle come alive.
Element 1.6.d
Students publish or present content that
customizes the message and medium for
their intended audience

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

The learning goal for this lesson is for students to be able to effectively explain/show their
findings about the life cycle to other. Overall, students should understand and apply their
knowledge about the different aspects of the life cycle of a plant.

Selected Basic Productivity Tool:

Microsoft PowerPoint

Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering X Understanding X Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating X Creating

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

X Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning

and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

Students will first have their objectives written out in the form of “I can” statements.
Students will then listen to the eBook about Charlie’s Cycle of growth.
They will then create their own PowerPoint using imagery, audio, animations etc.,
showing each phase of the life cycle of a plant.
The teacher will monitor student progress and assist with any technology difficulties.
Students will be assessed based upon a created rubric.
The lesson will be concluded with a group discussion about what was discovered
about the life cycle and any questions that the students might still have.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:
This technology will allow for students to stay engaged while being creative. It allows for
students to create their own images and then share their knowledge with the class to further
their learning experience. I will manage classroom behavior by using the “quiet critter” and
“collaboration critter.” When the “quiet critter” is out (usually some small stuffed animal),
students are quietly independently working. When the “collaboration critter” come out
(stuffed animal), students are working together, sharing ideas, and peer reviewing.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Students are being given a lot of flexibility and space to get creative with this project. Since
this project will be completed over the course of 3 days, students can work at their own pace.
This allows for pressure to be taken off of the students who need more time to complete
assignments. If students complete the project early, they can use the remainder of the time
to share their presentation to a classmate for peer feedback. This project is designed to keep
students engaged through the creation of their audios and visuals.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

This activity progresses student learning through their ability to comprehend. This project
focuses on students being able to comprehend the information given to them in the story
and then apply that information to create their presentation. The part of this project that I

am looking forward to is seeing the different tools that students start to use in PowerPoint
and how each student will show the life cycle in their own way.
