01 SIMPLE PAST

What is it?
It is a verb tense used to express actions or
states that began and ended in the past. For
example: They went to Mexico for their summer
vacation. / Ellos fueron a México para sus
vacaciones de verano.

It can be used to express both specific past

actions (I went to the park yesterday. / Yo fui
al paarque ayer.), and habitual actions in the
past (I went to the park every day. / Yo iba al
parque todos los días.). It is the context that
determines what use is referenced.
02 SIMPLE PERFECT

What is it?
It is a verb tense used to express an action that
occurred before another past action. For
example: When I arrived at the party, Emma had
left. / Cuando llegue a la fiesta, Emma se había
ido.

The past perfect in English is equivalent to the

past tense in Spanish (había ido, había dicho). As
in Spanish, the past perfect is used in relation to
another past tense to express previousness. For
example: I didn't want to see the play (pasado),
because I had already seen it (pasado anterior). /
No quise ver la obra, por que ya la había visto.
04 PAST PARTICIPLE
What is it?
It is what in Spanish we call the conjugated verb in
preterito. All compound forms of verb tenses in
English are formed with an auxiliary verb plus the
past participle. Therefore, to master English verbs,
you have to know the past participle of all verbs.
Regular verbs are formed with '-ed' at the end, for
irregular ones you have to memorize the list of verbs
in past participle.

The past participle is the most used verbal form in

English, because it serves to form the perfect tenses,
usually accompanied by the auxiliary verb 'have' in
the corresponding tense and the passive voice.
