DETAILED QUANTITY SURVEYING

TOPICS COVERED:
● BILL OF QUANTITY
● TAKING OFF
● EARTHWORKS
BILL OF QUANTITY VS BILL OF MATERIALS

Bill of Quantities (BOQ) includes an itemized list of all projects cost -

including labor and materials.

Bill of Materials (BOM) only includes materials.

BOQ FORM Measurement of dimensions

Expressed in m³, m², m

Measurement of Dimensions
Taking off (Quantity):
Volume = L x W x D
The process of preparing or
Area = L x W
defining a detailed list of all
labour and materials necessary for Linear Meter = L
the work and entering the items Where,
on properly dimensioned paper.
L - length
W - width/breadth
D - depth/height
3 Methods:
1. Out-to-out method
2. In-to-in method
3. Center Line method
EX 1. FIND THE VOLUME OF EXCAVATION OF TRENCH, BRICKWORK
IN CEMENT MORTAR, AND PCC.

SECTION
PLAN
BOQ FORM:
EARTHWORKS
Takes place after clearing all obstructions at natural grade in the
construction site and staking.

Covers the following items:

● EXCAVATION
● BACKFILLING
● EMBANKMENT
● SOIL COMPACTION
EXCAVATION
EXCAVATION COMPUTATION:
The process of moving soil, rocks,
existing subgrade structures or Volume = L x W x D
other materials in the purpose of
Where,
attaining a specific grade, as L - length
indicated on the Plans, for the W - width/breadth
construction of footings, at-grade D - depth/height
and subgrade beams, and laying of
plumbing lines and facilities
(septic tank, trench drains, etc.).
BACKFILLING BACKFILL COMPUTATION:
V = 1.25 (V - Vѕ)
Backfilled materials shall be
approved as non-swelling/ non- Where,
expansive materials such as clays. V - Volume of Backfill Materials
V - Volume of Excavated Materials
Excavated materials may be Vѕ - Volume of subgrade structural
considered as backfill materials if members
it passes the conditions
mentioned. 1.25 = Swell Factor
EMBANKMENT EMBANKMENT COMPUTATION:
V = 1.25V
Similar requirement for
backfilling materials. Where,
V - Volume of Embankment
The embankment/filling materials Materials
must be new for those to be V - Volume of Embankment
placed under unreinforced thin Materials in compacted state
concrete slabs and beneath
pipeline as supports against 1.25 = Swell Factor
cracking.
COMPACTION
● Prevents the likelihood of settlement of soil under concrete structures
which may cause potential cracking
● Usually done using a plate compactor
● Payable in terms of square meter (m²)

PLAN SECTION
EX 3. How much will it cost excavate 100 m³ using 10 men
at Php 327.00/day per man?
Given: 1 man can excavate 0.72 m³/day
EX 3. How much will it cost excavate 100 m³ using 10 men
at Php 327.00/day per man?
Given: 1 man can excavate 0.72 m³/day
Using 10 men:
Accomplishment/day = (Capability of 1 man per day) x (No. of men)
= (0.72 m³/day)(10 men)
= 7.20 m³/day
Number of days = Total volume of excavation / Accomplishment per day
= (100 m³) / (7.20 m³/day)
= 13.89 days = say 14 days
EX 3. How much will it cost excavate 100 m³ using 10 men
at Php 327.00/day per man?
Manpower cost:
Total Direct Cost = (Php 327/day/man)(10 men)(14 days)
= Php 45, 780.00
EX 4. How much will it cost backfill 85 m³ using 9 men
at Php 327.00/day per man?
Given: 1 man can compact 1.00 m³/day
