Title Description:

This session is designed for late middle-aged adults and provides an in-depth discussion of the

fake news phenomena in the digital age. Participants will learn about the origins and impact of

fake news and practical techniques for recognizing and confirming reputable information online.

The seminar aims to empower seniors to become confident and knowledgeable digital citizens,

capable of critically evaluating news sources and quickly navigating the information world. This

event will help them improve their media literacy and defend themselves against disinformation

in today's digital world.

Objectives:

The objectives of this project/seminar are to raise awareness among older adults about the

prevalence and impact of fake news, to provide them with essential digital literacy skills to safely

navigate the internet and social media, to foster critical thinking and fact-checking abilities, to

provide real-world examples to illustrate the consequences of misinformation and to empower

seniors to distinguish between reliable and untrustworthy sources confidently.

Rationale:

To begin with, old adults are increasingly exposed to digital communication and information

consumption, making them vulnerable to false information and misinformation. Providing

seniors with the skills to critically evaluate online content protects their decision-making. It

amplifies their roles as influential figures within their communities, enabling them to offer

guidance and education to younger generations.

Furthermore, the effect of fake news extends to democracy on a broader scale. In an age where

misinformation undermines public trust and impacts political outcomes, seniors' active

involvement in democratic processes, coupled with their comprehension of online information,

assumes critical significance. Promoting digital literacy empowers seniors to become responsible

citizens who contribute to well-informed debates and make informed choices when voting.

Consequently, this diminishes the sway of fake news, reinforcing the overall vitality of

democratic societies and ensuring that the voices of seniors hold value in the digital era.

Persons involved

The individuals participating in this event primarily consist of adults between 40 and 75. These

participants are active users of various social media platforms. One key characteristic of this

demographic is their relative need for more awareness regarding the prevalence and impact of

fake news in the online information landscape. The event is likely designed to educate and raise

awareness among these individuals about the potential dangers and consequences of consuming

and sharing fake news on social media. The goal may be to equip them with the knowledge and

critical thinking skills needed to discern reliable information from misinformation in the digital

age.

Date of Implementation

This event will occur on March 15-17, on Barangay 791 covered court. This is a three-day event

to help the audiences to have a deeper understanding of this topic. It will start at 9 am and end at

6 pm.

and well-informed digital citizens. They will excel in their capacity to evaluate information

sources critically and move about the complex digital information environment. Participants will

leave this three-day session with a set of resources for improving their media literacy, giving

them the ability to successfully identify reliable information from false or misleading content.

information and make wise judgments in the rapidly evolving digital environment.
