Q4_W4_AS9: Shadows in Space

Group Number and Name:___________________________ Date: _____________

Grade and Section: _________________________________
Competency: Explain how solar and lunar eclipses occur using models

Lesson: Solar and Lunar Eclipse

Objective:
• Show how eclipses happen
Materials:
• 1 big ball (crumpled paper, plastic or Styrofoam ball)
• 1 small ball (diameter must be about ¼ of the big ball)
• Flashlight or other light source
• 2 pieces barbecue sticks (about 1 ruler long)
• White cartolina or any paper larger than the big ball
• Any material as the base

Direction:
1. Pierce the small ball in the middle with the barbecue stick. Then push the stick into the material that
you have for stand. This small ball represents the moon.
2. Do the same for the big ball. The big ball represents the Earth.
3. Place the Earth one ruler away from the Moon and the Sun (the flashlight) is also one ruler away
from the Moon (see figure below). Make sure that the Sun, Moon and Earth are along a straight line.
Turn on the flashlight and observe.

4. Place the white paper one ruler away from the Earth (see figure below). The white paper must be
facing the Earth. Observe what is formed on the white paper.

Question 2. What is formed on the white paper?

5. Move the Moon along a circular path as shown below:

Question 3. What happens to the shadow of the moon in different positions as shown in the figure as you
move the Moon around the Earth? (Describe the shadow of the moon in different positions.)

Question 4. What is the effect of the shadow of the Earth on the Moon when the Moon is on position X?

NOTE:
• Take 2 pictures of your set up and a picture of yourself while doing the activity.
