Grade XI/ SPEAKING TEST, 2081

TIME: 2-3 minutes/student

Dear all,

As a part of your NEB English speaking test, you will be given 2-3 minutes to speak on the given topics.
The examiners are already assigned to the group of students. Hence, the students are advised to follow
the room and the examiner as per the schedule.

First Part: General questions about yourself (1 to 2 questions)

Second Part: Topic discussion (One to two minutes to speak up on the given topic/pictures)

Third Part: Follow up (One minute to speak up on any question)

Please note, you should follow your scheduled date and time. The Department of English (DOE) shall not
be responsible for rescheduling the test in case you miss the schedule without your faculty’s prior
approval.

For your convenience, you may find the following sample questions:

First Part: Tell me something about yourself/ your hometown/your school.

TIP: Elaborate your answers with: PAST/ PRESET/ FUTURE tense/ or tell your real story

Second Part:

Describe a house or apartment you would like to live in.

You should say:

 where it is / Where it would be


 what you would (like to) do there
 who you would (like to) live there with
 and explain why you would like to live in this place.
TIP: Speak on the topic; maintain coherence and cohesion; demonstrate the range of
vocabulary and the grammatical range.

Guidelines for the Examiner:

EVALUATION CRITERIA: FM: 4

1 Fluency and coherence 1 Mark

2. Pronunciation (not the accent) 1 Mark

3. Grammatical Range and Accuracy 1 Mark

4. Use of Vocabulary 1 Mark

Note: Parts 2 and 3 carry more weightage than the part one
SECOND PART: two minutes

1. Talk about an important year in your life.


You should say:
how old you were
what important things you remember from that year
where these things happened
and say why you think that year was important.

2. Describe an interesting historic place.


You should say:
what it is
where it is located
what you can see there now
and explain why this place is interesting

3. Describe a TV commercial you like very much.


You should talk about:
which business or organisation sponsors it
what it is about
whether it has been successful
and why you like it very much.

4. Describe a festival that is important to you


You should say:
when the festival occurs
what you did during it
what you like or dislike about it
and explain why this festival is important.
5. Describe a memory of your childhood.
You should say:
when it happened
what exactly happened
whether you remember it as a pleasant or unpleasant
memory and explain how it affected your later life.

6. Describe a friend whom you admire very much.


Talk about:
how long you have known him or her
whether your parents like him or her too
what you do together and explain what is very
admirable about him or her.

7. Describe a crowded place you’ve been to


You should say:
when you went there
where the place is (or, was)
who you went therewith
and explain how you felt about the place.

8. Describe a change that could improve your local area.

You should say:

what the change would be


how this change could be made
what problems are causing the need for this change
and explain how this change would improve your local
area.
