5 Test to determine mean value of breaking load (MBL)

5.1 Test setup (Sample preparation)

One end of the sample was firmly fixed to a rigid mounting surface of the test equipment and the load was
applied to the other (free) end of the sample to obtain the required bending moment at the fixed end. The
direction of the load passes through and was perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the arrester. The
force was applied by a hydraulic cylinder and measured by a force transducer. The deflection was
measured by a string potentiometer.

arrester series 3EP6 is 18 kNm. Therefore the measured mean breaking load (MBL) is 1.64 times higher
than the specified short-term load (SSL).

6 Test to verify the specified short-term load (SSL)

Three samples of surge arrester type 3EP6 210-3PJ41-2XA1, drawing see sheet-no. 4, were tested. Prior
to the tests, each test sample was subjected to a leakage check (tightness test) and an internal partial
discharge test.

The tightness was measured at an ambient temperature of 20 °C before and after the test.
Test results see sheet-no. 11, the test setup see sheet-no. 13.

The partial discharge level was measured at 1.05 times the continuous operating voltage before and after
the test. The noise level was 0.1 pC. Test results see sheet-no. 11, the test circuit see sheet-no. 12.
Report No.: HBA 11133 P Sheet-no: 8

6.1 Test setup (Sample preparation)

One end of the sample was including bottom insulating parts firmly fixed to a rigid mounting surface of the
test equipment and the load was applied to the other (free) end of the sample to obtain the required
bending moment at the fixed end. The direction of the load passes through and was perpendicular to the
longitudinal axis of the arrester. The force was applied by a hydraulic cylinder and measured by a force
transducer. The deflection was measured by a string potentiometer.

Report No.: HBA 11133 P Sheet-no: 9

6.2 Test procedure

On each sample, the bending load was increased smoothly to SSL, tolerance +5% / -0%, within 30 s to
90 s. When the test load was reached, it was maintained for 60 s to 90 s. During this time the deflection
was measured. Then the load was released smoothly and the residual deflection was recorded. The
residual deflection was measured in the interval 1 min to 10 min after the release of the load.

5 Environmental tests
The environmental tests were performed on one complete arrester type 3EP6 120-2PD31-2DA1 with a
height of H= 1459 mm, see drawing no. ET HP AR / 27068293-1300 on sheet-no.4. The environmental
tests consist of the temperature cycling test and the salt mist test in order to demonstrate by accelerated
test procedures that the sealing mechanism and exposed metal combinations of the arrester are not
impaired by environmental conditions.

Before and after the tests the leakage check was performed.

5.1 Temperature cycling test

After initial measurement the temperature cycling test was performed according to IEC 600068-2-14 with
10 cycles -35°C to +50°C with a temperature change gradient of 1 K/min and a duration of 3 h at each
temperature level. The temperature cycling test was carried out by “TechnoLab” (Am Borsigturm 46, D-
13507 Berlin, Germany) and is documented in the investigation report No. A120260 (see annex 1).

5.2 Salt mist test

After temperature cycling test the salt mist test according to IEC 600068-2-11 was carried out by the test
laboratory “TechnoLab” (Am Borsigturm 46, D-13507 Berlin, Germany) and is documented in the
investigation report No. A120260 (see annex 1).

5.3 Test result

5.3.1 Visual inspection

Visual inspection of the test sample after the test did not reveal any damages, see Photo. 5 of the
investigation report No. A120260 in annex 1.

5.3.2 Leakage check

The pressure p2 in the vessel was decreased to 500 mbar and kept there for 10 min. while the distance
between the inductive sensor and the pressure relief diaphragm was measured. If the distance decreases
permanently within a certain range during the test duration of 10 min., the arrester unit is tight. If the
distance does not change or even increases, the arrester unit is not tight.

5 Radio interference voltage (RIV) test

A radio interference voltage test (test circuit see sheet-no. 16) was performed according to IEC 60099-4
Ed. 2.2 (2009), Item 8.12 on four surge arrester types 3EP6 468-3PF43-2XA1, 3EP6 420-3PJ42-2XA1
3EP6 396-3PR42-2XA1 and 3EP6 240-4PJ51-2XA1. These four types are equipped with different
grading ring and corona ring configurations to cover the series of 3EP6 with one unit up to Ur = 240 kV
and the series of 3EP6 with multi units up to Ur = 468 kV.

At first the test samples were energized at 1.15 times the continuous operating voltage of the arrester
(Uc). The voltage then was decreased to 1.05 times Uc. After holding this level for 5 minutes the test
voltage was decreased stepwise to 0.5 times Uc and raised again stepwise to 1.05 times Uc, holding this
value for 5 minutes. Finally the test voltage was decreased stepwise to 0.5 times Uc. The amplitude of
voltage steps was 0.1 Uc. For each step the RIV-level was measured at a measuring frequency of
0.75 MHz on an impedance of 300  in the earth line of the coupling capacitor. The measuring system
was calibrated with a pulse generator at 50 pC.

The RIV-level X dB measured on the 300 - - impedance was converted to µV on 300 - - impedance
according to the following equation:
URIV = 1µV * 10 X (dB-1) / 20
