Building Information Modeling (BIM):
Transforming the AEC Industry
Architecture, Engineering, and Construction
AEC is the processing Industry of creating and building infrastructure or a facility

Stages in AEC

1.Design 2.Execution

Architecture, Engineering Construction

Communication:

Design Execution

To communicate Design to Execution we need a Engineering language

Q: What is Engineering Language?
A: Drawing is a Engineering Language.

What is BIM?
• Definition: A process for creating and managing intelligent 3D models of buildings

• Information-rich: Models contain data like dimensions, materials, properties, and costs

• Collaborative platform: Integrates disciplines, facilitating communication and

coordination.

Benefits of BIM
• Improved design quality: Identify clashes and optimize designs
before construction
• Enhanced communication: Share models and data for better
understanding and decision-making
• Reduced costs: Minimize rework, optimize material usage, and
improve project efficiency
• Improved facility management: Maintain accurate building data
for efficient operations.
Key BIM Dimensions
• 3D Modeling: The foundation, representing the building's
geometry and spatial relationships
• 4D Scheduling: Linking 3D models with timeframes for
construction sequencing and planning
• 5D Cost Estimating: Integrating cost data with the model for
accurate cost analysis and budgeting
• 6D Facility Management: Utilizing BIM data for efficient
maintenance, operation, and lifecycle management
• 7D Sustainability: Analyzing the building's environmental impact
and optimizing for energy efficiency and resource conservation.

The Future of BIM
• Emerging trends: Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, and virtual reality (VR)
integration

• Increased automation and data-driven decision-making

• Open BIM standards and collaboration platforms

• Focus on sustainability and building performance optimization

WHAT IS REVIT?
• Revit is software for BIM

• The name Revit means REVise

REVise InsT
nsTantly.
antly It was designed from day one as
meaning for doing something to do automatically and change
instantaneously in views and data base

• The original company that it came from (PTC – Parametric Technology

Corporation). October 31, 1997 as Charles River Software,
Software it was
developed mainly for Architecture

• 1999: First Release of Revit Architecture

• 2000: Company Renamed as Revit Technology Corporation

• 2002 : Autodesk Acquired Revit Technology Corporation and Developed

for Architectural ,Structural and MEP (HVAC – Ducting & Piping ,
Electrical, Plumbing and Fire Protection)

Revit File Types
• RVT: This is the main file format used by Revit to store project data. It
contains all the information about your building model, including
geometry, materials, and schedules.
• RFA:
RFA This file format is used to store Revit families. Families are
parametric building components that can be reused in multiple
projects. They can include things like walls, doors, windows, and
furniture.

• RTE: This file format is used to store Revit project

templates. Templates are pre-configured Revit files that can be
used to quickly start new projects. They can include things like
settings, views, and families.

• RFT: This file format is used to store Revit family templates. Family
templates are used to create new families from scratch. They define
the basic structure and parameters of the family.
Revit Templates
• Revit 2021.1 and later versions:
versions Limited content is installed with Revit, and
families can be loaded on demand with the cloud based Load Autodesk Family
command .

• Revit 2020 and earlier versions:

versions Revit content (templates and families)
associated with the annual release are installed by default with the program
(to the C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RVT <Version> folder). However, there are
some cases where it is necessary to manually download the content.
