Modelling a Residential Project in Revit: A Step-by-

Step Guide

Step 1: Setting Up the Project


1. Launch Revit: Open Revit software on your computer.
2. Start a New Project: Select "New" from the startup dialog or go to the File
menu and choose "New Project".
3. Select Template: Choose the appropriate template based on the type of
residential project you're working on (e.g., residential template, architectural
template).
4. Define Project Units: Set the project units according to your preference and
project requirements.

Import the DWG file and fix one corner as for the project base point

A er fix with respect to corner, select the DWG and Pin it

Create Wall types a er checking the dimensions as per DWG reference

To create wall types, select wall>edit type>duplicate>rename>edit

To create new wall type use duplicate and create, follow the same procedure like above

A er duplica&ng walls Create levels as per DWG references

To create a level go to any sec&on / eleva&on from the project browser

Select level from Datum draw line from right to le and update the remaing levels using array/copu
commands

And create levels like below

A er Crea&ng Levels Create Floor Plans as per respected Floors

To Create Floor Plans as per new levels, go to View tab>Plan Views>Floor Plan

Select all (Hold Shi key for selec&ng all) and click ok.

Go to Ground Floor Plan (Double click on Ground floor from the project browser)

As we already imported the DWG file and pinned as per 9th step

Now its &me to create walls as per DWG

To create wall, Go to Architecture tab>select wall>use pick line to trace the reference and follow as
per below reference image

Add Walls as per DWG reference exercise file followed by wall sizes

Add Doors and windows as per DWG reference exercise file followed by sizes

Note: To create Door/Window Type Load Door Family first from below default path

C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RVT 2022\Libraries\English-Imperial\Doors

A erwards edit type>duplicate>rename>30”x84”>update respected sizes in rough width

A er adding walls, doors and windows for the Ground floor

Need to add the stair cases as per plan,

Four stairs are available in the Ground Floor Plan

There are two cases available here

1. Staircase Type A
2. Staircase Type B
3. Staircase Type C

A er Selec&ng the stair icon will

• Need to check the parameters on the Proper&es palate.


• Make sure the Base level and Top level are selected as per image.
• Actual tread depth can be updated, a er checking the cad file
tread length.

Measure the stair case width from the cad file

Fix the width, Riser & tread depth as per edit type.

#Select cast in situ stair to update

Update Edit type proper&es as per above screen shot

Draw Stair case as per below

Later Select landing and add it

Add Landing by sketch and click ok

2. Staircase Type B

For Staircase Type B we will go with the Model in place

Go to Architecture tab>Component>Model in-Place

Select Category>Stairs>ok

Give the Name of Stair and click ok

Model in-place family Tool Bar

Select Extrusion and draw 3 extrusions like below Followed by Extrusion Start & end from the
proper&es tab as like below

Join all

By clicking on one next to other, and finally looks like a single element. Click finish model

3. Staircase Type C

NOTE: Stair case Steps are purely based on levels used in the project to get the accurate results,
please follow the stairs as per levels only*

To Create a floor

GO to Architecture Tab> Floor>Create type 4.5” Thick Floor

Draw floor using pick line

Ground Floor Model have been created as per Cad reference

Now Copy en&re model as except outside stair

Paste Aligned to selected Levels

By holding CTRL key Select First Floor &

A erwards adjust the First floor & Second Floor Walls, Doors and windows as per DWG exercise files

Add Railings as per dwg file

GO to Architecture Select Railing

Select railings as per desired type using sketch patch (must me single con&nuous line)

Adding Planta&on as per DWG file

Go to Massing & Site Tab Select Site Component

Place the Rpc shrub family on the desired loca&ons on ground floor, a erwards copy to the desired
levels as per reference

Crea&ng 3D Camera View

Go to Ground Floor Plan

Go to View tab>3Dview>Camera

Place the camera and extend the view like below image

Crea&ng Rooms as per requirement

To Create Room

Go to Architecture Tab>Select room

To create room the area suppose to be closed,

There are three cases

1. Closed Walls
2. Using Room Sepera&on lines

3. Rooms can be divided using room separa&on lines also

Rooms have been labelled and added as per requirement

Room name can be updated by clicking on the Text of room tag
