IV. Reading Comprehension (Space and Solar System: Venus)

This is Venus and it is the hottest planet in our solar system. It is almost the same size as Earth. It spins backward,
this means the sun comes up in the West and goes down in the East, not like Earth. It is one of the rocky planets
like Mars and Mercury. Which means you could walk on it. It has lots of very thick clouds which make it so hot it
can melt metal. So you really don’t want to go there! It is the second planet from the sun. As the brightest
natural object in the Earth’s night sky after the Moon. Venus can cast shadows and can be visible to the naked
eye in broad daylight. It has been made sacred to gods of many cultures, and has been a prime inspiration for
writers and poets as the “morning star” and “evening star”. Venus was the first planet to have its motions
plotted across the sky, as early as the second millennium BC.
