Area of a Circle
A circle is a closed plane figure in a plane. Every point in a circle is equidistant or the same
distance from a fixed point in the plane called the center of the circle. A circle is
named by its center.

The formula for the area of a circle is derived from the formula of a parallelogram which is the
product of the length of its base and height (A = bh). In Figure 1, a radius, which is a line segment from
the center of the circle to any point in the circle, is shown. We know that the circumference of a circle is
obtained using the formula C = 2pr or pd. When the circle is divided into two semi-circles (Figure 2), it
will give us half of its circumference, which becomes pr. If you will subdivide each semi-circle into small
congruent sectors (Figure 3) and arrange them to form a comb-shaped figure as shown in Figure 4; the
length of the base of the comb-shaped figure is equal to pr and its height is equal to r. Hence, the formula
for the area of the circle is pr2, where p = 3.14, and r2 is the radius squared or radius multiplied by itself.
EXAMPLE: What is the area of a circle with radius 2 cm?
