Area of a Circle

A circle is a closed plane figure in a plane. Every point in a circle is equidistant or the same
distance from a fixed point in the plane called the center of the circle. A circle is
named by its center.

On the left is circle A. The black outline around it is

what we will measure when we want to know the area
circumference. It is the distance around the circle.
A Meanwhile, the space with gridlines is the area. For
instance, in a pizza, the crust is the circumference while the
pie itself is the area.

The diagram below illustrates why the area of a circle is equal to the product of p (pi) and the
square of its radius (pr2). pr

The formula for the area of a circle is derived from the formula of a parallelogram which is the
product of the length of its base and height (A = bh). In Figure 1, a radius, which is a line segment from
the center of the circle to any point in the circle, is shown. We know that the circumference of a circle is
obtained using the formula C = 2pr or pd. When the circle is divided into two semi-circles (Figure 2), it
will give us half of its circumference, which becomes pr. If you will subdivide each semi-circle into small
congruent sectors (Figure 3) and arrange them to form a comb-shaped figure as shown in Figure 4; the
length of the base of the comb-shaped figure is equal to pr and its height is equal to r. Hence, the formula
for the area of the circle is pr2, where p = 3.14, and r2 is the radius squared or radius multiplied by itself.
EXAMPLE: What is the area of a circle with radius 2 cm?

To find the area of a circle, follow the following steps:

Solution: A = pr2 1. Use the formula for the area of the circle.
= (3.14)(2 cm)2 2. Substitute the given values into the formula.
= (3.14)(4 cm2) 3. Multiply the radius by itself, then the product to pi.
= 12.56 cm2 4.Simplify your answer. Express your answer in square
units.
ACTIVITY: Solve for the area of a circle using the given radii. Show your solutions.
1) r = 5 cm 2) r = 10 cm 3) r = 13 cm
