What is Moonlighting ?
Moonlighting refers to the practice of
working a second job outside normal
business hours. Therefore, an
employee may work a normal 9-to-5
job as a primary source of income
but work nights at a different job in
order to earn extra money.
Example: A software engineer who works in
an IT company, his working hours are during
the day time but he also gives online tuition
to the B.Tech students at night.
Types of moonlighting
According to the HRM (Human Resources
Management), Moonlighting is mainly divided into four.

• 1. Blue Moonlighting
Blue moonlighting is the term used to denote failed efforts at moonlighting.

• 2. Quarter Moonlighting
Quarter moonlighting is the practice where an employee works in a part-time job after his regular job.

• 3. Half Moonlighting
half moonlighting is used when the employee spends 50% of their available time at a part-time job.

• 4. Full Moonlighting
Full moonlighting is managing two full-time professions/jobs in parallel.
Is moonlighting ethical?
• The companies are split into two groups by
moonlighting: old-school IT enterprises and
new-school ones.

• For commercial reasons, the majority of


traditional businesses forbid their staff from
working for third parties.

• The new age group, meanwhile, thinks that


morality should evolve through time.

• Wipro and Infosys recently fired people for moonlighting.
• HCL Tech saying the company does not support dual employment.
• Most of the IT majors, in recent times, have come out strongly against moonlighting.
• Wipro, Infosys, HCL and TCS have toughened their stance against moonlighting in recent days.
• It all started after Swiggy introduced its moonlighting policy for it employees.
• While a few other companies, like Swiggy, Tech Mahindra, and even the minister of state for Skill
Development believe that there’s no problem with employees involved in dual employment.
• In a online survey, The majority of voters were against the practice of moonlighting as they felt
that Indian companies must ban this practice.
• The US-based IT major IBM says all of our employees sign a contract stating that they will work
full-time for IBM once they start with us. Therefore, it is unethical for them to start doing second
jobs.
Moonlighting in Infosys
• Kris Gopalakrishnan, co-founder of Infosys said that
in order to earn the trust of their employer and to
fully focus on the project at hand, people should
only work for one company. Employees were
informed by Infosys in an email with the subject line
“No Double Lives” that moonlighting was against the
company’s code of conduct and might result in
dismissal.
• On Oct 13, 2022; Infosys CEO & MD Salil Parekh said
they has also fired ‘moonlighters’ in the last 12
months because of confidentiality issues when
found working for two companies.

• Infosys will now allow employees to take up side
projects.
• On Oct 20, 2022; Infosys has mentioned it its email that
employees can do so only after getting the company's
consent.
• To recall, Infosys had previously fired employees for
extending their services in two companies.
• Infosys said it counts on its employees to ensure that
this does not impact their ability to work with the
company effectively.

Consequences
• After Infosys, more Indian IT companies may allow
employees to take up “gig work” outside the company with
prior approval.
• It may not deliver huge benefits to attrition-ridden
companies as only a very small percentage of the
workforce is likely to opt for such a scheme, they noted.
• Authorising employees to work for non-competing
establishments—with prior approval — may do little to
enthuse IT workers and may instead lead to managerial
disruption.
