Reducing Plastic, Ramadan – 1445h

Project Report by Umoor Kharajiyah

Plans for Mawaid jaman, Iftaari and general use.

Plastic is used in every sphere of life because of its ease of availability and
convenience. Its harmful effects on us, individually, and on the planet, in general, are
certainly well known to everyone.
Plastic has been an active contributor to global warming and climate change.
Greenhouse gases are emitted throughout the plastic life cycle. Extraction, refining
and manufacturing of plastics are all carbon intensive activities.
Keeping the above points in mind, members of Umoor Kharajiyah took an initiative
to spread awareness on the usage of plastic bottles/containers by reaching out to
every mumeen/mumenah on their masallahs and in thaals. We also gifted reusable
bottles.
Few other actions done were – change of plastic namak danis to sachets at all
miqaats and jaman. Use of steel spoons for ice cream and soup/gravy instead of
plastic spoons. Use of steel and reusuable glasses of water served during jaman.

1. Iftaari khajoor and biscuits to be given in reusable plastic containers – All

mumineen will be given a small plastic container on pehli raat and encourage
everyone to carry it everyday to collect biscuits and khajoor for iftaar. Khidmat
guzaars will serve iftaar snacks at all entry points in their respective containers.
Mumeen can also carry their own steel or Tupperware dabbas as per their
preferences too.
Cost of each container – Rs 2-3 per piece
Size – 100ml

2. Avoid Single-use plastic safras – Safras used are made of plastic and disposed of
while mixed with wet waste.
Using reusable safras. Volunteers or members of the thaal can wipe down the reusable
safras and ready them for next use. This has been done in Marol:

Agro Biograde Chennai makes biodegradable carry

bags. We can enquire if they can make safras for us.

3. No Single use plastics water bottles – Avoiding the use of single-use water bottles
is a commendable step towards reducing plastic waste and promoting
sustainability. Here are some alternatives and strategies to help you avoid using
single-use water bottles:

Reusable water bottles: Invest in a durable, reusable water bottle made from materials
like stainless steel, glass, or BPA-free plastic. Carry it with you wherever you go and refill
it whenever needed.
Members of Umoor Kharajiyah will request the public to avoid usage of plastic bottles and
switch to more economic reusable bottles. This will be monitored by all members of
Umoor Kharajiyah on all floors.

4. Reusable shoes bags – Mumineen should be encouraged to bring reusable

cloth/fabric shoe bags instead of single use plastic bags.

5. Avoid gifting plastic items – Avoiding gifting plastic items is a great way to promote
sustainability and reduce plastic waste. Here are some alternative gift ideas that
are eco-friendly and thoughtful:
a. Food – Gifts like dry fruits or nuts. Homemade chocolates or cookies are also
quite popular.
b. Homemade gifts – Silat items like tasbeeh, bookmarks, hafti covers or pouches
are great gift options.
