INTRODUCTION

Foundtest Drilling Sdn. Bhd. was incorporated under companies’ act, 1965 on 4 th
December 2014 and Foundtest (M) Sdn. Bhd. on 2nd April 2004 and as an independent
specialist contractor which principally provides testing services on soil, foundation and
building. It is a professional engineering firm specialized in providing high strain and low
strain dynamic pile testing, analysis, consulting services, geotechnical investigation and
geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring for the construction industry.

High accuracy of raw data collected on site is essential to obtain a reliable result.
Hence, our engineers and technical personnel are well trained and equipped with annually
calibrated instruments to minimize the technical error on site while maximize the quality
of jobs undertaken. Data evaluations and professional engineering advises can be
presented on site to avoid any work delay due to the uncertainties of the construction
progress.

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES
Foundtest (M) Sdn Bhd & Foundtest Drilling Sdn Bhd was formed as a
foundation contractor serving both the private and public sectors. It successfully
addresses the varied needs of a broad spectrum of clients including Government
authorities, large construction and engineering groups, consultants and manufacturers.
The activities of Foundtest are focused primarily on Soil Investigation, building and
Infrastructure foundation, soil improvement namely Bore Piling, Micro Piling and Jet
Grouting. To support these activities, Foundtest has well equipped hardware and relevant
software which is conducted by a team of highly experienced personnel leaded by
qualified engineers to ensure optimum client satisfaction.

Soil Investigation assists the foundation design team by providing relevant soil
test on site. The design engineers need to gather adequate on-site soil information in
order for them to proceed with the foundation design. Foundtest Drilling is able to serve
the consultant’s need by providing complete Soil or Geotechnical Investigation works
which includes Soil Boring, Standard Penetration Test (SPT), Soil Sampling, Laboratory
Test, Mackintosh Probe test, Geono Vane Shear, Field Density, Proctor/Compaction Test
and etc. Our fieldworks also include some instrument installation and monitoring, such
as inclinometer, standpipe piezometer, vibrating wire piezometer, extensometer and etc.

In bore pile construction, numerous types of machineries and equipment were

adopted to drill bigger and deeper bored pile in order to achieved economy of scale in the
piling industry. The method Foundtest Drilling using for the bored pile construction has
being verse and widely practised in Taiwan for more than a decade. The boring
equipment is a simple unit with large frame runs by electrical motor. The main parts play
major role in achieving effective drilling in Reverse Circulation Drilling is the powerful
suction pump at the external of the rig with an output of 200m3/hr. The RCD method
maintain the slurry level at pre-recommended level at all time and hence improved bored
stability during drilling which contradictory to bored pile drilling by Kelly method which
creates constant hydraulic suction as the boring bucket is lifted up from the borehole.
The RCD creates less noise since the boring works using primarily generator set with
equipped noise damper and drilling works is mainly runs by electricity. No clinking
sounds since the soil is cut and sucks from the borehole is filtered through desander or
filtration tanks. The light weight and small size drilling rig can be easily mobilised to
confined area. With all the advance features, it has lower cost in large diameter bored
pile drilling up to 3m diameter and depth up to 80m.

Micropile is another type of pile which is act as a supporting structure to transfer

the load from the building to the ground, constructed by the drilling process and are
often keyed into rock. Foundtest Drilling is using Casagrande and Kobelco drilling rigs
for diameter ranging from 100mm to 300mm. Micropile is now gaining greater
popularity and getting wider acceptance because of the requirement to comply with no
noise and low vibration regulations, expecially in congested environments.
Geotechnically, micropile is most suitable in ground conditions such as shallow
bedrock, boulders and cavities, intermediate hard strata and underpinning.

Jet grouting is a construction process using a high kinetic energy jet of fluid to
break up and loosen the ground, and mix it with thin slurry. It is not truly grouting but
rather a hydrodynamic mix-in-place technique producing a soil-cement material.
Foundtest Drilling utilizes single, double and triple jets for mass treatment, linear
treatment and inclusions, in soils of good to poor groutability. The very high-speed jet
loosens the soil, the jetting fluid washes some of the soil to the surface and the slurry
adds a binder to the soil mix.

Foundtest Drilling Sdn Bhd also provides Piling Services using other common
method, such as Hydraulic Impact Driving and Jack In.

Foundtest is also actively engage in Pile Testing activities that serves as quality
control for the foundation constructions. Dynamic pile testing technology was
introduced to the industry few decades ago for the determination of pile capacities. Its
reliable result has gained acceptance from structural and geotechnical engineers as a cost-
effective quality assurance method. Thus, it gradually replaced time-consuming and
costly conventional static load test. This testing method is compliance to The American
Society of Testing and Materials standard (ASTM:D4945). The dynamic testing
methodology utilizes the strain gauges and accelerometers which are directly attached to
the pile for measurement. All readings are recorded automatically using a Pile Driver
Analyzer and later transferred to a signal matching software to compute and predict the
pile bearing capacity, static load-settlement behaviors, pile driving stresses, piling
hammer performance and the pile capacity distribution.

Another method of pile testing which is widely used is the Low Strain Pile
Integrity Testing, which is commonly known as Pile Integrity Test (PIT). This is a very
quick and economical way of pile testing which is used to determine the integrity of
foundation piles, especially bore piles. PIT can be used to detect defects in piles such as
cracks, necking or voids. During testing, a special hand-held hammer is used to generate
a “low strain” compressive impact wave on the pile. The wave created is measured by an
accelerometer attached leveled section of the test pile top. Recorded wave is graphically
displayed for defect determination.

Method for determination of the pile integrity not just PIT only. The Sonic
Logging Technique is also used to determine the defect in cast in-situ piles, caisson,
barrettes and diaphragm walls. Such tests can produce an economic survey of each pile to
complement the more expensive capacity testing which is restricted to a small percentage
of piles. In homogeneous concrete, free of defect and variation in quality, the velocity of
"sonic" wave propagation is constant. The sonic logging technique works by way of
detecting any acoustical irregularities on the sonic profiles between the access tubes. For
example, a sudden increase of the travel time at any depth indicates a defect at this depth

or a relatively low-quality concrete has being localized. The cross-hole method has been
described in a number of recognized standards (AFNOR 1993, ASTM 2002). As we shall
see later, the cross-hole method may be further refined to produce high-quality results.

Besides conducting pile testing, Foundtest also assist the foundation design team
by providing relevant monitoring works during the construction stages on site.

construction site at any stage with Inclinometer, Settlement Marker, Optical Prism,
Tiltmeter, Crack Meter and etc.

construction industry in Malaysia. We had been actively involved in soil & pile testing
