Activity Title : Area of a Circle
Learning Target : Solve routine and non- routine problems involving the area of a
circle.
Reference(s) : MELC, 21st Century MATHletes pages 302-309
LAS Writer : Jene A. Duhaylungsod

The formula in finding the Area of a Circle:

A = π x r x r or A= πr2

Let us solve the problem.

Example 1: The diameter of a tambourine is 10 inches. Find the area of its surface.
a. What is asked? The area of the surface of tambourine.
b. Given : 10 inches-diameter of a tambourine

c. Solution: In solving for the area of a circle, we need to find out the measure of its
radius (r). Since in this problem, we are given the diameter, we will divide 10 by
2 (diameter = 2 radius). So, 10 ÷ 2 = 5. We have 5 as our radius.
Area = πr2
A= 3.14 (5 in) 2
A= 3.14 (5in) (5in)
A= 3.14( 25 in2)
A= 78.5 in2
d. Final Answer: The area of the surface of the tambourine is 78.5 inches2.
Solve the following on a separate sheet of paper.
1. A horse is tied to a peg using 2.4 meter string. How large is the area within which
the horse can roam and eat grass?
2. A therapy pool in a water spa is in the shape of a 9 meter wide circle. How
much material would it take to cover it?
3. Shane needs to clean a circular garden that has a radius of 5 meters. What is the
area of the garden?
4. There is a circular pool at the park with radius of 11 yard. What is the area of the
circular pool?
5. Karla has a circular carpet, with a 10 meter diameter. What is the area of the
circular carpet?
