UNAM 2024 academic year to begin with a Core Semester on 24 January 2024, with the curricular
transformation that is implemented in 2023, the University of Namibia has introduced a Core Semester.
The Core Semester is a compulsory 5-weeks period that will precede the first semester of the academic
year. I have personal experiences such as adjustment period, academic and student support. I prepared
for the university by time management, note taking, social connections and familiarize yourself with
university resources.

Firstly, As an UNAM students, I have personal experiences, like any new educational institution,
transitioning to UNAM involves adapting to a different environment, academic culture, and social
dynamics. I familiarize myself with the core modules. The core semester is compulsory and lasts for 5
weeks, so I attend all the necessary sessions. I prepared myself for a blended approach to learning,
which includes both in-person and online components. Now use a smart device.

Secondly I have been supported both academically and personally as a student, UNAM provides various
resources for students, including teaching, learning, and assessment support. Both faculty and
management play crucial roles during this transitional period. UNAM adopts a blended approach for
offering Core Semester modules/courses. This means that students can access content through a mix of
online resources and in-person sessions. Students with smart devices are encouraged to use them for
learning. For those without smart devices, UNAM provides access to computer labs and other
designated venues across campus. This UNAM offers various services to enhance students’ academic
experience. It includes counseling, academic advising, and assistance with study skills.

On the other hand, I prepared myself for university by managing my time, during the core semester,
effective time management is crucial to balance your academic commitments, personal life, and well-
being. I develop a one-page semester schedule that includes all your class projects, papers, tests, and
problem sets. I use a weekly schedule to get an at-a-glance view of your tasks for the entire week. I
listed all important activities for the upcoming week. I allocate time for each task based on priority. I
ensure some free time remains for flexibility and relaxation and allocate sufficient time for studying and
completing assignments. I make sure I take note, when the lecturer emphasizes certain words or
phrases, I underline or highlight them in my notes. Most appealing module was English, because the
lecturer is excellent. The lectures are very interesting and make me eager to listen. Real-time examples
help me understand better. Handouts are useful and clear. Interactive lectures. Less appealing, no
specific module.

In conclusion, The Core Semester serves as a foundational period for students to delve into essential
modules and courses. It spans 5 weeks and is designed to prepare students for subsequent academic
challenges. I have personal experiences such as adjustment period, academic and student support. I
prepared myself for the university by time management, note taking, and social connections and
familiarize yourself with university resources. English was the most appealing module.
