SECTION 4 – COOLING TOWER

1 GENERAL

The cooling tower(s) shall be of established make and shall be rated by recognised institutes
such as JCI & CTI

Each cooling tower shall serve only one (1) particular chiller-set, i.e. each cooling tower shall
have its own condenser water piping supply and return to one (1) particular condenser water
pumpset, i.e. Common header, common supply and return system is no longer permitted.
But however, inter connecting and normally-shut isolating valves shall be installed between
each set of condenser water piping system to permit change over of condenser pump or
cooling tower in case of breakdown

Cooling towers shall be of mechanical induced draught type, crossfiow arrangement, with
heat rejection capacities based on the following conditions, unless otherwise specified and
shall be suitable for the space provided in the drawings.

The cooling towers shall be of modular design, where the modules can be assembled to form
a row of cooling towers. Each module shall be provided with individual basin, sump and
internal partition wall such that a module can be taken out for maintenance without affecting
the operation of other cooling towers.

Care must be given to make sure that height of cooling tower water outlet point to that of
condenser water pump inlet is always 10 feet or higher or exceed N.P.S.H. or whichever is
higher to eliminate the cavitations and air lock problem during start-up.

Entering water temperature 36.11 deg. C (97 deg. F)

Leaving water temperature 30.56 deg. C (87 deg. F)

Ambient temperature 27.77 deg. C (82 deg. F)

Each cooling tower shall be complete with motor, fan, casing, infill, water distribution system
and accessories.

2 CASING AND WATER BASIN

The cooling tower casing including basin and sump shall be of fibreglass reinforced polyester
material. The basin shall be self-cleaning with drain fittings.

All supporting and structural components of the cooling tower that are made of steel or
ferrous material shall be hot-dip galvanised, and further protected against corrosion with zinc
chromatized aluminium finish where exposed to a higher degree of corrosion. All bolts and
nuts shall be of stainless steel material.

3 DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM

The hot water distribution shall be by means of gravity type basin. It shall be made of
Fibreglass Reinforced Polyester resin. It shall be light weight and non corrosion to maintain
stable water sprinkling effect.

4 FAN

The cooling tower fan shall be of axial type with aluminum alloy fan blade. The fan shall be
statically and dynamically balanced, and tested to not less than 15% above design speed.

SECTION 4 – COOLING TOWER

The drive arrangement of the fan shall be V-belt & pulley drive with total belt capacity not
less than 1.5 times the rated H.P. of the motor.

5 MOTOR

The fan motor(s) of the cooling tower shall be of totally enclosed fan cooled type with extra
moisture protection on windings and double-sealed permanently lubricated bearings. The
motor enclosure shall be of IPS5 rating.

Refer to section on "Motor" for further requirements of cooling tower fan motor.

The fan guard shall be of welded construction of heavy gauge steel, hot-dip galvanised.

6 INFILL

Infill shall be of wave formed sheets of ultra-violet rays treated polyvinyl chloride (PVC),
suitable- for operation with inlet water temperature up to 55 deg C. Infill shall be easily
removable from side without dismantling the tower.

Drift eliminators shall be designed to reduce drift losses to not more than 0.02% of circulated
water.

7 ACCESSORIES

Make-up water valve shall be a solid bronze float valve with a large diameter float located for
easy access, or access door provided for same.

External inspection doors and doors at the internal partition walls shall be provided to gain
entry into the tower to facilitate inspection and easy maintenance. Permanent access ladders
and handrail shall be installed. Materials shall be hot dip galvanised steel.

8 INSTALLATION

Cooling towers shall be assembled, rigged and installed in accordance with the
manufacturer's recommendations and to the satisfaction of the Engineer. The associated
auxiliary structural support and vibration isolators shall be supplied.

Precautions shall be exercised throughout the assembly of cooling towers to minimise

objectionable airborne noise. Vibrations of the cooling towers must be effectively isolated
from the structure of the building.

9 NOISE

The cooling tower shall be of the low operating noise type. Acceptable noise level shall be as
indicated in the schedule. Cooling towers operating above the minimum acceptable noise
level shall be liable for rejection and be replaced with an acceptable cooling tower at no cost
to the Owner.

10 MISCELLANEOUS

Supply and install all ancillary fittings, including the make-up water supply piping, quick-fill,
bleed-off facilities drain and overflow piping, and/or as shown on the drawings.

SECTION 4 – COOLING TOWER

11 PERFORMANCE GUARANTEE AND CERTIFICATION

The manufacturer shall supply a written guarantee that the cooling tower offered for this
project shall be capable of performing the duties required as stated in the schedule and
specification, by submission of exact type technical data for the wet bulb temperatures
anticipated at the project locality.

Temperature Curves:

The tower manufacturer shall submit curves which show leaving water temperature from the
tower at the design water temperature range at the design wet bulb.

Sound Pressure Levels:

Sound testing to be conducted at the factory of the manufacturer under controlled conditions.
Submit data on cooling tower sound pressure levels with all fans operating at high speed and
with full water flow.

Permissible sound level shall be as stated in the Schedule of equipment.

Failure to Perform on Site:

Should the tower fail to perform after installation, according to the approved performance
curves, steps shall be taken to rectify and make good any defects or inadequacies, and to
perform a complete tower test at site, at no extra cost.
