In a village, there lived a widow who lived with her two beautiful
daughters, namely Bawang Merah and Bawang Putih. Bawang Putih's
biological father who was also the husband of Bawang Merah's mother had
passed away, so Bawang Putih was Bawang Putih's half-brother.
Shallots and Garlic have different character traits and
personalities. Bawang Putih is diligent, kind, honest, and
humble. Meanwhile, Bawang Merah is lazy, arrogant, jealous.
Bawang Merah's lazy personality was also exacerbated because her
mother spoiled her. His mother always gave Bawang Merah whatever she
wanted

While Bawang Putih does all the housework, washing, cooking,

cleaning the house, and she just does it herself. Meanwhile, Bawang Merah
and her mother only spend time for themselves.

When they need something, they just ask Bawang Putih. Bawang Putih
never complained about her bad luck. He always served his stepmother and
sister happily.

One day, Bawang Putih was washing her stepmother and Bawang
Merah’s clothes in the river. Bawang Putih didn’t realize that a piece of cloth
that belonged to her mother was washed away in the river. He also felt sad,
thinking that if the cloth was not found, he would be blamed, punished, or
kicked out of the house.

Fearing that her mother’s cloth could not be found, Bawang Putih kept
looking and walking along the river. Every time he saw someone by the river,
he always asked about his mother’s cloth that was washed away, but
everyone didn’t see where the cloth was.
 Finally Bawang Putih came to a place where the river flows into a cave.
Surprisingly, he saw a very old woman in the cave. Bawang Putih also asked
the old woman if she saw her mother’s cloth.

The old woman knew where the cloth was, but she made conditions
before handing it over to Bawang Putih. The condition is that he must work
to help the woman. Because previously he was used to working hard, so he
was willing to help the old woman.

When it was evening, Bawang Putih said goodbye to the old woman
then the woman also handed her a cloth. Because of Bawang Putih’s
kindness, the old woman offered a pumpkin gift.

There are two pumpkins, one bigger than the other. Bawang Putih was
asked to choose the pumpkin she wanted. Because Bawang Putih was not
greedy, she chose a small pumpkin. After that Bawang Putih returned to her
house.

His stepmother and Bawang Merah were very angry because Bawang
Putih was late. Bawang Putih then told what had happened. Her stepmother
was still angry because Bawang Putih was late and only brought one small
pumpkin. So, his mother slammed the pumpkin on the ground.

“Prakk...” And the pumpkin broke.

But strange, it turns out that in the pumpkin there is gold jewelry that
is beautiful and sparkling. His stepmother and Bawang Merah were very
surprised. They then feel that they will become very rich if they have so much
jewelry.

But because of his greed, they shouted at Bawang Putih and snapped
at her why Bawang Putih didn’t take the big pumpkin. In the minds of
Bawang Merah and her mother, if the big pumpkin was taken, they would
definitely get more jewelry.

To fulfill their greed, Bawang Merah followed the steps told by Bawang
Putih. He willingly washed away his mother’s cloth, walked along the river,
asked people and finally came to the cave where the old woman lived.
 However, unlike Bawang Putih, Bawang Merah refused to help the old
woman with work and she even arrogantly ordered the old woman to give
her a bigger pumpkin.

The old woman complied with Bawang Merah’s request to give a big
pumpkin for Bawang Merah.

Bawang Merah happily brought the big pumpkin that the old woman
gave her, while imagining how much jewelery she would get.

Upon returning home, his mother greeted Bawang Merah. Not long
after that, the pumpkin was smashed to the ground.

Instead of the contents of the jewelry, various terrifying venomous

snakes came out from within the gourd. Bawang Merah and her stepmother
finally realized what they had been doing was wrong, and asked Bawang
Putih to forgive them.

The moral message that can be learned from the story of Bawang Putih
and Bawang Merah is, be a diligent child so that other people will like
children. Besides that, remember that being greedy will not make you happy,
instead it will bring you trouble in the future.
