Assignment 3

Plot M-phi curves for rectangular beam with the following given, and cases at the same
excel sheets, and make conclusions

Given:
Rectangular beam, Thickness = 800mm, width= 300mm
Concrete strength = 28 MPa
Cases
1) Beam is reinforced by one layer 5 20 (Grade 60)
2) Beam is reinforced by Two-layers 10  20 (Grade 60)
3) Beam is reinforced by one layer 5 20 (GFRP bars, Fu=1400 MPa, E=220GPa)
4) Beam is reinforced by one layer 5 20 (Grade 60), and concrete is confined
assuming ultimate strain = 0.006

Conclusions:
 Note that in stage prior to cracking “uncracked region”, cracking moment
and cracking curvature are the same for all cases, so in this stage, they
aren’t affected by reinforcement (reinforcement has no effect
approximately).
 Case1 and case4 have the same strength, increasing the ultimate strain
does not affect the moment, but the curvature of case4 much higher than
the curvature in case1, and so on the ductility, case 4 has the largest
ductility, because its ultimate strain (0.006) is two time the ultimate strain
for others (0.003).
 Case 3 which is GFRP bars case has the largest strength because its yielding
stress “ultimate stress” is very high compared to normal steel “1400 MPa”,
but it has the smallest ductility “the smallest curvature”, GFRP bars collapse
immediately, but because of concrete, it has very small ductility, note in this
case, the GFRP bars has an adequate area of reinforcement to not be failed
before concrete.
 Case 2 has two times area of normal steel than case 1 “the typical case”, so
the strength in case2 is much higher than the strength in case1, but the
curvature in case2 is much smaller than the curvature in case1, and so on
the ductility.
 Note that the case which has the largest strength has the smallest ductility,
because reinforcement area and yielding stress of reinforcement increase
the strength, but they have a bad effect on ductility.
