Fuel Flexibility Tool v2 April 2011
Fuel Flexibility Tool v2 April 2011
The FFT calculation tool has been created for plants to evaluate potential solid fuels which can be utilized to obtain lower fuel costs.
The tool requires entering some operational data as well as the fuel characteristics.
FFT estimates plant limits for: %H2O to dry, % Cl, %S, and HGI for various fuel combinations. These results are then displayed
on the 'FFT' sheet for sorting to the cheapest potential fuels.. If it is not possible to use the cheapest fuel or fuel blend, potential
measures for eliminating the limitation should be evaluated for increasing the fuel flexibility.
FFT provides a quick, reliable estimation of the plant limits when assessing potential fuels to be used. In some cases, additional
operating parameters supported by a heat and mass balance may be necessary for validation of selecting new fuels.
For those plants having additional coal mills and/or kilns, separate FFT calculations should be completed on each to evaluate the
fuel flexibility.
Cell protection:
To avoid involuntary mistakes, spreadsheets are protected so that it is only possible to fill in yellow cells in normal use.
To unprotect, use the password "fft" - at your own risk!

Safety Some potential fuels may contain a VM content in excess of 36% thus being classified as "High Risk" based on the definition in the Coal Shop Safety
Technical Agenda. FFT estimates the risk (either Low Risk or HIgh Risk) for each fuel combination. Based on the type of coals to used, the plant should
refer to the guidelines set forth in the Coal Shop Safety TA.
Data The 'Data' sheet is used for entering necessary design and operating data to be used in the tool.
Alt Fuels This sheet is used to enter alternative fuels mixes, which can be selected on the FFT page
The Home sheet can be used to quickly evaluate if a potential fuel is within the plant limits. Additionally, the Home sheet is used for simulating operating
Home
conditions to re-evaluate which potential fuels are within the plant limits.
Fuel_List The 'Fuel_List' sheet is used for entering the characteristics for potential fuels.
The 'Blend' sheet is used for creating an existing and future potential blend of up to 5 fuels from the available fuel list. The calculated future blend is
Blend automatically introduced as Fuel Number 3 on the 'Fuel_List' sheet. Note that the sheet will not work without an existing blend
This sheet is used to display the results from the FFT calculation. Each possible blend of two fuels varying from 0-100% is listed along with the respective
fuel characteristics of that blend. For each blend, the plant limits on % H2O to dry, %Cl, %S, and HGI are determined. If the characteristics of the fuel blend
are within the plant limits, the blend can be considered for use.
1 Enter all fuels in the "Fuel List" sheet, including the existing fuels used (this is important since the simulation is based upon the current fuel)
2 In the Blend sheet select the existing fuels used from the pulldown list, be sure that there are no errors in the Existing Blend line
3 In the Blend sheet select the required fuels to be used for a multi-blend "FFT Blend" from the pulldown list (optional)
4 In the "Fuel List" Select the fuels to be considered in the upper box
5 Check that no errors appear in the data in the upper box otherwise the sheet will not run (any unused lines need to be set to blanks by selecting blank
6 in

variability for the fuel HGI and moisture
FFT 7 In the "FFT" sheet also set the target max clinker SO3, this will allow increase in fuel sulphur
8 Select if the start up condition is to be used to determine drying and grinding limits, important for high AF substitution
9 Select the desired alternative fuels mix to be considered
10 Set any required simulations for mill improvements in the simulation table select "yes" to take effect
Note the residue target % of 90µm will default to 50% with simulation set to "No"
11 Click on "Create Blends & Assess Limits" button to make the simulation
Note that the existing figures will be cleared and a new list generated in a few seconds
12 Sort results according to requirements - normally total fuel cost
13 Use the Automatic filter to find acceptable fuel mixes
Note: In the FFT sheet for blends of high volatile and low volatile high risk will not be activated at 20% since the blend is made in steps of 10%. However in
practice the plant should stay below 20% high volatile fuel to keep within a low risk situation.
Note: any change of data will require a recalculation of the sheet by pressing "Create Blends & Assess Limits"
Volume The 'Volume' sheet (optional) can be used to calculate the total required quantity of coal based on FFT calculations. Existing contracts should be included.

Use of the FFT will provide a general estimation on potential level of sulfur and chloride in the fuel which can be used. Final confirmation must be done by
detailed volatile balance and based on prior operational experience.
Although most coals contain no chloride content or very little, the FFT can estimate the allowable Cl content in a fuel blend based on the level of chlorides in the raw mix.
