THE GREAT

DEPRESSION AND
GERMANY
The Great Depression was a global economic
crisis that began in 1929. Germany, still
recovering from World War I, was particularly
hard hit. The Wall Street Crash triggered a
chain reaction, forcing Germany to repay loans
it could not afford. Unemployment skyrocketed,
wages plummeted, and businesses closed. The
government offered little support, leaving
millions desperate. These conditions created
fertile ground for a new political party to rise to
power: the Nazi Party.
THE RISE OF
THE NAZI PARTY
The economic despair caused by the Great Depression
opened the door for the Nazi Party. Hitler blamed Germany's
woes on minority groups, scapegoating them for the country's
problems. He promised to restore Germany's former glory and
eliminate these "enemies." The Nazis used innovative
propaganda techniques to spread their message. By 1932, they
had gained significant political power.
HITLER B EC OM ES
CHAN CE LL OR
In a fateful decision, President Hindenburg
appointed Hitler Chancellor in 1933. Conservative
politicians thought they could control Hitler, but
they were wrong. Hitler quickly moved to
consolidate power, establishing a dictatorship
that would plunge Germany and the world into
war.
