Common Navigation in Staad

a)to pan Just press the mouse Wheel then Drag it.

b)to zoom use scroll wheel.

c)to undo press ctrl z and ctrl y to redo.

d)to Click multiple use Ctrl key.

1) Configure your Staad to Metric and Y axis as Up Direction

Design Code For NSCP 2015

2)Create folder First before Creating your Staad Model, So that All the files will be compiled in that
folder
3)Then Create a Node in (0,0,0) to Start your modeling

4)Make a Beam or Column by Copying the first Node Using Ctrl C and Ctrl V, then Use Add Beam then
Select the First node then the Second Node. (Ctrl C and Ctrl V is also Applicable when Copying in Beams
or Column)
Or By Using Translation Repeat but First Select the Beam or the Node you want to Translate Repeat. (For
Faster Access, Use Space Bar then Choose the Icon of Translate Repeat)
To Select Nodes or Beam, Just Choose the Necessary Selection Tool you Need, then select the node or
beam or use rectangular selection to select multiple. (You can Also Use Right >Select Cursor)

To Toggle the Numbering of Nodes just use Shift N and Shift B to Toggle the Beam Numbering.

To View the perspective you want, just use this tools.

To Show or hide the Dimentions of two Nodes Just Use, Utilities>Node Tools> (Node to Node Distance)
or (Remove Node to Node Distance). To show or hide All the Dimensions of Beams, Just use
Utilities>Beam Tools>Dimension Beams. (Use Space Bar then Choose “Geometry tools Group” for faster
Access.

Modeling Tip

1)Start From Making Node from (0,0,0)

2)Make the First Column from bottom of Footing (0,0,0) to the Ground Floor Using Translate Repeat
with link step to automatically connect the node. Example 1.2m to 1.5 from the top of footing to the
ground floor.
3)Use Translate Repeat in x-direction with link step and open base to make the other column and
beams.

4)Then Ctral A to Select all the Created columns and beams then Use Translate Repeat in z-direction
with link step and open base to make the columns and beams in z direction.
5)Then Select the Floor Beams and Translate Repeat in y-direction with link step to create the columns
and beams in the other floors.

To Show the 3D Rendering of your Model go to View>3D Rendering or (Right Click then Choose 3d
Rendering at the bottom for faster access). You can Also Change the Background and the Beams or
Columns Color by Right Clicking the the 3d interface then selecting “Change Background Color or Change
Entity Color”
To View only the Selected Members, Just select the members then click View>Selected Objects. Then to
view all members just select “Selected Objects” Again or Select “Display Whole Structure”. Useful when
you want to add members to 2nd flr.

To add beams or cut the beams just use Geometry>Add Beams. Then select the beam you want to cut or
add node.
To merge beam, first select it then click Geometry>Merge Beams

In staad All the intersection must be cutted or else it will have errors when running the analysis, so to
cut the intersecting beam just select the beams then select Geometry>Intersecting beams>Intersect
Selected Beams.
To Toggle the start and end of beams, just press “Shift E” (Start is gree, End is Blue)
To make cantilever beams just select the existing beams then stretch those beams using
Geometry>Stretch Beam

To select all the columns just go to Select>Beams>Parallel to y. and to select all the beams just select
inverse.
To organize the node numbering just select all the nodes then use Geometry>Renumber Nodes>Joint
No.

To renumber Beams, just use Geometry>Renumber Beams>Member No.

To Rotate the view you can also use the left, right, up and down arrows keys.
PART 2, ASSIGNING PROPERTIES,
MATERIALS, SPECIFICATIONS AND
SUPPORTS
Rule of thumb for Setting the Initial Depth of Beam is D = L/10 or L/12

After Making the Geometry go to “PROPERTY TAB” and Define your Initial Member Sizes.

After Defining your Initial Member Sizes, Select the Define Member Size then Select the Columns or
Beams then Click Assign to Selected Beams. (Aside from Selected Beams there are other Options like
“Use Cursor to Assign” and “Assign to View”). The Sign R1 in the Modeling View represent “Reference 1”
of the Section Size.
To Check if you Already Assign the Member Size, Just View 3d Rendering

If you check “Highlight Assigned Geometry” the members with the selected member size will be selected
in the Geometry view.

To select the members with no properties, just click Select>Missing Property>Missing Property. It will
only select the missing property in the current view, so to check if there is a missing property in the
whole structure, just view all the structure first before selecting missing property.
After Assigning all the Properties go to “Material Tab”

The Default Concrete strength of Staad is 27.5 Mpa or 4000 psi. But for 1 to 4 storey 20 Mpa or 3000 psi
is still ok. So you need to Create new Concrete Material.

To Create new material go to Materials tab then click create then Choose “Concrete” in the title
dropdown then Change the Name to 20MPA (title should have no spaces) then change the density from
23.56 to 24 kN/m^3 so that the design will be conservative. Then for Young’s Modulus just use E = 4700
√ f ' c . For 20Mpa E = 2.101903899. Then change the compressive strength of concrete to
20,000kN/m^2 but to edit it first click the dropdown of “Type of Material” then choose Concrete.
After Creating the New Material, Select the New Material then Assign it to the Model.

After the Materials are Assigned go to “Specification Tab”

Since Intermediate Beams are designed to control the deflections of slabs and we intend to design it to
have a maximum moment in the midspan, to do this we will release the moments in the major axis (Mz)
and Minor axis (My). (Although in actual situations there is still a moment at end spans, but it is just
minimal that the 2 minimum supporting bars at the top are enough to resist those moments, so it is ok)

To release the Major and Minor moments in Beams just click Specifications>Beams>Release then make
Release in My and Mz in “Start and End” of Beams. Then Assign it to the intermediate Beams
Since NSCP requires reduction factor for Moment of Inertia for Columns and Beams, we must also set it
in staad. By Just going to Specifications>Beams>Property Reduction Factors. For Columns the Reduction
is 0.7 and for Beams the Reduciton is 0.35. After it Assign it to Columns and Beams.

Since we will not model the Floor in Staad, we need to consider the stiffness of the floor, to make it just
go to Specifications>Node>Floor Diaphragm then input the heights of the floors from the bottom of the
footing (0,0,0), After it, it will automatically added.
After it go to “Support tab” and Create Pin Support or Fixed Support. For Residential House 1 or 2 storey,
Pined connection is ok but for Big Structures pin will fail in Drift so it is better to make Fixed Support.
Then Assign it the Supports in the Model.
