QUESTION 1 [15 MARKS]

(a) With a suitable diagram, describe the Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction.

[5 Marks]

(b) The magnetic circuit shown in FIGURE 1 is made of two different materials. An air gap

of 1 mm is created at material 2. A coil of 1200 turns is wound at material 1 and carries a

current, I = 0.4 A. The properties of both materials is given in TABLE 1.

TABLE 1. Properties of magnetic core

Material Type Cross-sectional Mean length, Lc1 Relative
area (cm2) (cm) permeability, μr
1 Nickel-Iron 2.5 24 900
2 Cast steel 3 8 500

FIGURE 1. Magnetic circuit

Assume the fringing effect is negligible,

(a) Construct an equivalent circuit for the magnetic circuit [3 Marks]

(b) Give two effects of the air gap to the magnetic circuit [2 Marks]

(c) Determine the magnetic flux density in the air gap [5 Marks]

QUESTION 2 [15 MARKS]

(a) Diode is a device made of semiconducting materials used for solid state switches. Briefly

discuss the major characteristic features of a diode.

[5 Marks]

(a) FIGURE 2 shows a single-phase bridge rectifier circuit used to build a 115 V DC power

supply loaded with 17.5 Ω resistance. AC supply has 50 Hz frequency.

FIGURE 2: Single-Phase Bridge Rectifier

Calculate the following parameters:

(i) The value of the AC voltage. [2 Marks]

(ii) The type of connection if 0.5 H inductor is needed to be connected to the load.

[1 Mark]

(iii) The energy stored in the 0.5 H inductor (WL) [2 Marks]

(iv) The peak-to-peak current ripple (%) [3 Marks]

(v) The current across each diode [1 Mark]

(vi) The frequency of the DC power supply output [1 Mark]

QUESTION 3 [15 Marks]

(a) DC motors experience several types of losses during operation. List down the five type of

losses in a DC shunt motor. [5 Marks]

Answer:

(b) A 15 kW, 230V DC shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.5 Ω and a field resistance

of 180 Ω. At no load condition with rated supply voltage, the motor runs at 1100 rpm with

an armature current of 3A. When loaded, the motor draws a line current of 50 A form the

same supply. Determine the output power and speed of motor if the stray loss assumed to

be 150 W. [10 Marks]
