PREVIOUSLY...
We have already discussed the different types of
visual aids, and how to use them. Since our topic is
Patterns of development in writing: Compare and
Contrast, we can use that prior knowledge to help
us in constructing a compare and contrast essay.
 Compare Vs Contrast

To compare means to liken Whereas contrasting means to

something, or to identify the identify the things that make two
similarities of two or more or more subjects unique to
subjects; eachother.
Writing a compare and
contrast essay
It is a style of writing wherein you, the writer, points out the
differences, and similarities between two or more people,
things, concepts, or events. Prior to writing the actual essay,
there are certain tools that you can use to map out your
outline.
 Venn Diagram
A Venn diagram is an illustration that uses
overlapping circles to show the logical relation
between two or more sets of items. Circles that
overlap have a commonality while circles that do
not overlap do not share those traits. The Venn
diagram was popularized by John Venn in the
1880s. (Kenton, 2024)
It consists of 2 Components, the
overlapping parts of the circles, and the
ones that do not.

The overlapping parts of the circle

depict the similarities of the subject of
comparison.

While the parts that do not overlap

depict the contrasting qualities of the
subjects.

A comparison chart is a straight-

forward way of showing compare
and contrast of two or more
subjects. The column headers are
Fast food chain
where the subjects are placed,
and the beginning of each row is
Serves chicken as a
main dish the characteristic. If the subject
has that characteristic, it is
A Filipino Brand denoted by the checkmark.

Select two or more subjects (anything under the sun),
for writing a compare and contrast essay. Illustrate
using either a Venn diagram, or comparison chart, then
write an essay using the illustration as a guide.
