IMPORTANT NOTES

X-RAY EQUIPMENTS CAN BE DANGEROUS TO THE HEALTH OF BOTH PATIENTS AND

OPERATORS UNLESS PROPER SAFETY MEASURES ARE STRICTLY OBSERVED.
Although this equipment was designed and manufactured according to the most up-to-date Safety
Standards, the X-ray beam always represents a danger, should not the operator be properly qualified
and trained. Excessive exposures to X-rays cause damages to the human body: therefore, all the
necessary precautions must be taken so as to prevent unauthorized or unskilled personnel from
operating this equipment, thus jeopardizing themselves and third parties.
Before executing any operation, the personnel being authorized and qualified for using the present
equipment, must be aware of the protection measures established by the International Committee
for Radiological Protection, as well as other relevant national Standards.

NOTE: This equipment is in compliance with the requirements established by the 89/336/CEE
Directive applying to the Electromagnetic Compatibility.
In order to comply with such requirements, special technical measures were adopted (such as the
application of anti-noise filters and/or ferrites on some circuits) and precise earthing connections
were defined. Also metallic covers and their clamps are realised and checked by means of fixing
devices of special conductive material-gaskets ensuring both immunity to external sources of
disturbance and limitation of possible internal noise generated by the electric circuits.
Therefore, it is recommended that the technicians executing possible maintenance or
reparation interventions, should not modify the connections path and should carefully
reconnect all earthing connectors of the gaskets (should these ones be removed during the
technical intervention or fault research operations), as well as restore with the utmost
attention the protection gaskets in the same conditions and with the same fixing device
originally foreseen.

Note: The original document was drawn up in Italian.

GENERAL MEDICAL MERATE S.p.A shall decline all and any responsibility with regard to the
good functioning of the present equipment should its installation and/or its maintenance be
executed by unauthorized personnel.

1.1.2 Connections
There are two connectors on the board, one 4-pin connector (C4) and one 12-pin connector (C12,)
as well as a 6-pin terminal box (M6). The motor phases and the supply (both power and logic)
must be connected to the board, while the connectors apply to the control and transmission signals.

Pin 1 on C12 connector is provided with a 5VDC output which is used for supplying the
potentiometer adjusting the analog reference of the speed.
The direction input (Pin 6), controls the reversal of rotation of the motor. The two conditions of
this input can be as follows: either floating or closed to earth; when Pin6 is floating, the motor is
rotating and the current direction of rotation can be changed by closing to earth Pin6: now the
rotation will go in reverse (opposite direction of rotation).
Pin 7 controlling START/STOP has a similar functioning: when Pin 7 is floating the motor is
deactivated: to make it start, it will be sufficient to close to earth Pin 7.
Pin 10 is provided with an alarm output linked to the current absorbed by the motor against the
programmed maximum value (MO). Its behaviour is described in the section related to
programming procedures (DE, TI and MO controls).
Pin 4, Pin 9 are not used.

C4 Connector applies to the serial communication and therefore it will have to be connected to a
DB 9 pin-female connector that can be housed by the DB 9 pin-male connector of the PC serial
port. The connection scheme is indicated at the previous page.

1.1.3 Programming
The Brush functioning board allows to program the following parameters:

TABLE “Tabella 2:” Controls description

VM: VM is used to set the minimum voltage value that the board will apply to the motor. This
means that if VM=0 the motor is stopped being the potentiometer totally disconnected.

VP: VP sets the maximum voltage value that the board will apply to the motor. When the
potentiometer is totally connected, the motor will receive a voltage equals to VP Volt.

CO: CO sets the gain level. The higher the CO value is, the greater the reaction will be. Please
note that an excessive CO value may determine considerable huntings on some motors.

RE: RE control sets the level of voltage to the motor, thus the level of speed at the start of the
reversal of rotation. The higher the threshold is, the quicker the reversal of rotation will be.

Section 2: X-Ray tube rotation adjustment rev. 0 - December 2006 - pag. 5/12
OPERA RT20 GUITAR
ADJUSTMENT MANUAL - Cod. 62197

SS: Soft Start timing (time needed to reach the set speed); this has effect only at the start and
does not affect the reversal of direction;

SU: Is used to decide whether the output is to be the tachometric or the encoder type. If it is the
tachometric type, SU also sets if the output has to be in current value or speed value.

SU=1: It selects the tachometric voltage output at 0/10V on Pin 4 of C12. In

other words: if SU=1 you will have a 0/10V analog output
proportional to the motor speed (10V = 10000 rpm);

SU=3: It selects the tachometric current output at 0/10V on Pin 4 of C12.

This means that if SU=3 you will have a 0/10V analog signal
proportional to the instantaneous current absorbed by the motor.
This output must be calibrated (please make reference to pag.6);

MO: It sets the alarm threshold for the current absorbed by the motor. This value is correlated to
the motor maximum current: in fact, the board allows for a certain DE time, a current
absorption by the motor equal to double the MO value.

DE: This is the time during which it is allowed to get an absorption value equal to double the
maximum current value being set by MO (i.e., 2⋅MO). DE starts reckoning as soon as the
MO value is exceeded: once DE time has elapsed, the current gets limited to MO.

TI: This is the holding time of the MO current; once TI has elapsed, the board deactivates the
motor. TI starts reckoning as soon as the alarm output switches on (if a led is provided
being connected to the output). The led lights up:

1. in DE if the current reaches 2⋅MO; if this current in DE is higher than MO but

lower than 2⋅MO, the led will remain switched off;
2. if DE time has elapsed and the current has not decreased below MO value;

As soon as the led switches on and TI has elapsed, the SVT-MIMO board will deactivate the motor.
On the contrary, the motor will not be deactivated if, before TI has elapsed, the current has
decreased below a value equal to 0.5⋅MO approximately. In this case, the led switches off and
operation is restored.

PROGRAMMING
In order to program the SVT-MIMO, it is necessary to establish the communication between the
components. The communication between the PC and the board is realised by means of the RS232
serial port: therefore it is necessary to have at your disposal a serial communication program, such
as, for instance, Windows HyperTerminal.
Assuming that Windows is a well known operating system being widely used, we will refer to the
HyperTerminal program in the following procedure.

Section 2: X-Ray tube rotation adjustment rev. 0 - December 2006 - pag. 6/12
OPERA RT20 GUITAR
ADJUSTMENT MANUAL - Cod. 62197

You shall make sure the board is off; now you shall physically connect the PC Serial Port (e.d.
COM1) to the C4 connector of the SVT-MIMO board and run the Windows HyperTerminal as
follows:

You shall click on:

Start ⇒ Programs ⇒ Accessories ⇒ Communications⇒ HyperTerminal

The HyperTerminal window will be displayed and you shall double-click on "Hyperterminal.exe"
program. You shall name the connection, for instance SVT-MIMO, and then click on the “OK”
button. A new window will prompt you “Connect to”: you shall select from the “Connect” menu
the following option: "Directly to COM1" and then click on the “OK” button.
The window "Properties” - COM1" will now appear allowing you to set the selections for the port.
Please select the fields as shown in the following figure and then click on the “OK” button:

The connection has now been established, but you will be aware of it only after switching on the
board.
Anyway, before switching on the board, it is recommended you should set some other selections of
the communication window:

• You shall select “Properties” from the "File" menu;

• You shall select the “Settings” folder and then click on the “ASCII Settings” option.
• Now you shall select:
• "Add line advance...."
• "Typed characters feedback...."
• " Start a New Paragraph automatic control"
• You shall now click on the “OK” button and then click again on the following “OK” button.
Section 2: X-Ray tube rotation adjustment rev. 0 - December 2006 - pag. 7/12
OPERA RT20 GUITAR
ADJUSTMENT MANUAL - Cod. 62197

As soon as you switch on the board, the HyperTerminal window will display a note referred to the
SVT-MIMO Hardware and Software version, followed by the parameter values currently
memorized on the EPROM (Fig. 2).

Fig. 2: Feedback from the board when it is switched on

This window notifies that the board is ready to receive the commands.
Should you need to modify the parameters value, you shall make sure that the following
conditions are observed:

1. The motor must be off (Pin 7 of C12 in floating condition)

2. The syntax must be properly entered (capital letters)

Should a command be sent when the motor is on (rotating), the SVT-MIMO board will notify you
there is an Error: "E". Should a command be sent with a wrong syntax, the 'SVT-MIMO board will
prompt you "?".
