PERFORMANCE TASK IN EARTH AND LIFE SCIENCE

2nd QUARTER (S.Y. 2023-2024)

“TRACING THE EVOLUTIONARY CHANGES IN A PLANT”

Theoretical Background

Plants are multicellular organisms in the kingom Plantae that uses photosynthesis to
make thier own food. There are over 300, 000 species of plant; common examples of plants
include grasses, trees, and shrubs. Plants have an important role in the world’s ecosystem. Like
animals, plants respond to the stimuli in the environment. However, plants respond differently.
These responses affect teh growth and development of plants.

Plant domestication is the process of artificially selecting plants to increase their

suitablity to human requirement (taste, yield, storage, and cultivation practices) with the
presence of natural factors such as light, water, nutrients and temperature.

In this task, you should find out how plants respond to different environmental stimuli
and design a poster tracing the evolutionary change in a crop plant (e.g. rice or corn). You
should be able to come up with your own experimental design. Perform the experiment and
record all the data.

Problem
1. Design an experiment that will show the growth response of plants to light, water,
nutrients and temperature, and:
PRE- LABORATORY ACTIVITY

OBSERVING LIFE IN THE FIELD

A. Pre-activitty
Direction: Answer the following items in paragraph form. Write your answers in the box
provided.
1. What is an ecosystem?
2. What consists an ecosystem? What are the abiotic factors that affect an ecosystem?
3. What is the importance of a balanced ecosystem?
4. How is energy from the sun transferred in the ecosystem?
5. What is the use of water in plant growth?

B. Methods
Direction: Study in advance the procedure of the expeiment on the next page. Make a
schematic diagram on how you will perform the experiment.
EXPERIMENT PROPER

MAKE THOSE PLANT RESPOND

I. Objectives
1. Identify the biotic and abiotic factors in an ecosystem.
2. Explain the energy flow in an ecosystem.
3. Observe and trace the evolutionary changes in a plant in 2 weeks span.

II. Materials
Notebook/ paper Plant (preferably can grow faster) such as:
Pencil/pen 1. Monggo seed
Magnifying glass (if any) 2. Lettuce
Camera 3. Onions, etc.

III. Procedure

A. Design an experiment that will show the growth response of plants to light,
water, nutrients and temperature.

1. Go to the backyard and observe different organsims and plants that you see.
Check if the place is rich in water and sunlight. Record your observations in your
notebook/paper.
2. Use magnifying glass to observe closely the small animals and other plants in
the field that you think can affect the growth of the plant you about to grow. Try
not to disturb ecosystem.
3. Take photos of the ecosystem that you observed.
4. Place 3 plants you need to grow at different places of your backyard. Make sure
that each plant receive different amounts of water and sunlight.
5. Label the plants A, B and C.
6. You may use fertilizers to modify the growth of each plant.
7. Check the plant every 2 days. Take a picture and record your observation. You
may use measuring instrument (like ruler) for precise and accurate observations.
