Halloween- how is it celebrated in the UK?

EFL lesson plan that focuses on the customs related to Halloween in the UK. Your students will watch a story of two kids who are
preparing to the Halloween party. By the end of the lesson young learners will be able to talk about the Halloween traditions in the
UK + more familiar with present simple vs. present continuous.

Topic: Halloween
Activity: speaking, listening, vocabulary, grammar- present simple vs. present continuous
Level: elementary, pre -intermediate
Learner: kids, young learners
Time: 45 minutes
Materials: YouTube video + worksheet

1. Set up the context of the lesson, pre-teach vocabulary (10mins)

Show young learners Picture 1 . Ask them to name the things


Possible answers: pumpkin lantern, spider, zombie, wizard, witch, spider-web, blood, wizard's hat, spooky, creepy
Ask students if they know when Halloween is celebrated. Answer 31st October

Explain that people celebrate Halloween to remember the dead. It's not a sad day but a happy one during which a lot of people wear a
fancy dress and play games.

2. Describe photos, play the video and do the exercise (15 minutes)

Tell students that they're going to watch a video about Jack who is preparing the Halloween party. Show students photos and ask
them what's happening in each photo.

Ask students to work in pairs, distribute Exercise 1. Explain that they are going to listen to Jack and his friends in 6 different
situations, students have to put the correct order of the photos.

Play the video but don't watch it yet.

Play the video again, this time allow students to watch it as well.

Check the answers.

3. Grammar practice – (10minutes)

During the video Jack and his mum explain different customs and traditions performed during Halloween but also they refer to the
things they're planning this year. Your learners are going to watch the video again and find the difference between present simple and
present continuous.
Distribute Ex.2- students watch and listen to the video again and fill in the missing words:
1. I....................... a pumpkin lantern.

3. I ................ a sheet.
4.We …............ lots of food.
5.I....................... sandwiches.
6.I....................... scary pizzas.
7.Our friends …................ to the party.
8.Everyone ….................... scary.

Later ask students to do Ex 3 in which they have to divide the sentences 1-8 in Ex2 in two categories:

Follow up
Ask learners to talk about the Halloween customs in their country + what are the things you're doing this year.
You could also play the games that Jack and his friends played in the video.
