If you've ever been to the public baths in Japan, then you've probably seen
the bath house paintings at least one time. Yes, I'm talking about those

huge wall paintings of Mount Fuji and things like that.

Unfortunately, nowadays it seems as if there are only three craftsmen left

in Tokyo who can paint those pictures. I once asked one of those three
craftsmen, a man called Kiyoto Maruyama, to do a live painting show. The
level of his skill was nothing short of what I expected.

He prepared a board about 1.5 meters in height and three meters in width
and completed the picture with just a paintbrush and paints, but the time
required was about four hours. His clever wielding of the paintbrush
expressed amazing mountains, forest, water, and clouds; he created
beautiful scenery that you wanted to gaze at forever.

And so like that, that completed picture was hung on the wall of the cafe I
managed, but after all this time it's now gracing the wall of my own home.

If you happen to have the chance to go to the public baths and see the bath
house paintings, the painter's name will be inscribed on it somewhere. I'd
love for you to check that out too.
