According to Frazier & Thorpe (2020) the selection of U.S. Supreme Court Justices has recently
become increasingly politicized. Nominees are often subject to intense scrutiny and partisan
debates, potentially compromising the judiciary's independence. This politicization can result in
nominations being driven by ideological considerations rather than the qualifications and merits
of the individuals.
Qualifications for a Supreme Court Justice should prioritize legal expertise, impartiality, and a
commitment to upholding the Constitution. A solid academic and professional background in law
is essential, including a deep understanding of constitutional principles (Kladis, 2021). Justices
should demonstrate a history of fair and nonpartisan judgment, with an ability to interpret laws
without undue bias (Kladis, 2021).
Furthermore, justices must possess strong analytical skills, empathy, and the capacity to
appreciate the diverse perspectives of society. Integrity, a willingness to engage in rigorous legal
debate, and a respect for precedent are vital traits. By prioritizing these qualifications over
political affiliations, the Supreme Court can better serve as a bastion of justice, free from undue
political influence.
