COMBUSTION STROKE When both valves are closed, the spark plug (seen between the intake and exhaust valves) fires, igniting the gasoline. EXHAUST STROKE As the piston rises, the exhaust valve opens, enabling the wasted exhaust gasses to be pushed out of the engine.
