Q 1.1 During cooking, a chemical reaction takes place in which metals are converted into A3
metal ions. These metal ions mix with the food being cooked, and it has been
suggested that these could have an impact on health. Copper ions have been linked
with liver damage, and aluminium ions have been linked to Alzheimer's disease. In
rural Africa, iron ions in cooked food have been shown to reduce anaemia in children.
Determine the charge on an aluminium ion, and justify if the aluminium has been
reduced or oxidised.
Q 1.2 Determine which element in the following compounds has the highest oxidation A4
number. Show your working for each compound to support your answer.
Sulphur in SO3
Carbon in CO2
Aluminium in AlCl3
Sulphur is CaS
Q 1.3 A4
Write down the names of the given compounds using oxidation numbers.
FeCl3
CuO
MnO2
V2O5
Q 1.4 All reactions in which electron transfer occurs are redox reactions. The diagram A4
below shows the electron transfer during one redox reaction.
Identify the elements undergoing oxidation and reduction, and write balanced half-
equations for each process.
