The time has now come to say more about Sartre’s third
form of being— beingfor-others; and about the manner in
which he develops this notion, particularly in that section
of UiEire et le n&ant dealing with “ concrete relations”
between people. Sartre does not in general accept
Berkeley’s doctrine that “ to exist is to be perceived,” but
he does adopt it, in a somewhat roundabout way, in the
case of the existence of human beings. According to
Sartre it is only in a very indirect and complicated way
that I can be said to exist as an object for myself. But he
believes that I exist in a direct and simple way as an
object for other people. They see me as part of the furni
ture of their external world. They observe my behaviour.
I, seeing them see me, and knowing that they observe my
behaviour, acquire, through them, this added form of
being which Sartre calls being “ for-others.”
Hegel also believed that our self-consciousness exists
only because it exists for another person and that we
must exist for others in order to exist for ourselves. Sartre
might be quoting from Hegel when he says “ the road of
interiority passes through the Other.” I am an object
only because I exist as an object for another person; I
need from the other person an acknowledgment of my
being; he is the mediator between me and myself. All this
is summed up in what Sartre calls the look or gaze. I f I
exist for another person, I do so through his look. The
relationship is reciprocal. To another person I am in my
turn the Other. M y gaze gives him objective existence.
And so “ the value of the other’s recognition of me de-

would sooner kill myself than look like that old sodomite.**
In his bad faith, Daniel becomes converted to Chris
tianity, but his religion turns out to be just as much a
fraud as his marriage. His moment of rejoicing comes at
last with the Fall of France. When he returns to Paris and
sees nearly everybody running away in a panic before the
German advance, Daniel experiences a thrill of real
satisfaction:

Sartre calls the “ ideologue* * is a much humbler person
than the philosopher; the former merely develops the
1 great original systems of the latter, he “ exploits the
domain.” Thus in calling existentialism an ideology,
Sartre defines it as a “ parasitic system that lives on the
margin of the knowledge to which it was at first opposed,
► but to which it now attempts to integrate itself.” 13 In
other words, Sartre now sees existentialism as “ wishing to
integrate itself” into Marxism.
This is not to say that existentialism is ready to be
swallowed up at once by Marxism. But “ from the day the
► Marxist quest assumes the human dimension, existen
tialism will no longer have a raison d'etre.” Meanwhile
Sartre believes that the integration of existentialism with
Marxism can bring about the modernisation which
„ Marxism badly needs. He claims that Marxism has lost
its theoretical basis; its concepts are “ diktats” ; its
spokesmen are far too abstract, rigid, and out of touch
with actual experience; they are bogged down in out-of-
, date psychology and metaphysics, without being aware
of their own teleology. A matter on which Sartre lays
h stress is, as one might expect, determinism. He wants
Marxism to purge itself of its nineteenth-century material
istic concept of determinism and accept from existen
tialism a rational concept of human freedom. In doing
so, Sartre docs not think Marxists would be violating the
* spirit of Marx’s own teaching. Sartre takes as his text a
remark of Engels: “ Men make their history themselves,
but in a given environment which conditions them.” 14
Sartre stresses the words that “ men make their history” ;
it is they who make it, not History— not the Past— which
makes them. Thus Sartre would have us believe that he is
out to achieve a purification of Marxism rather than a
dilution of it by the assimilation of existentialist insights.
► The rest of this volume is largely taken up with a study

Jean-Paul Sartre is among the most controversial and important of
living writers. He is also uncommonly versatile: a dramatist, novelist,
journalist, philosopher, psychologist, and political theorist, his
various writings have been much discussed in all parts o f the world.
Yet no critic in any language has hitherto attempted to appraise
Sartre’s work as a whole. This brisk and penetrating study by a
well-known British author effectively fills that gap.
M r Cranston argues that it is not only the pressures of the cold
war which explain Sartre’s withdrawal from fiction-writing and
metaphysics to concentrate on political drama and sociology; he
I maintains that the inner contradictions o f the existentialist system
itself have driven Sartre to the point where he has been able to avoid
a radical revision of hi* own theories only by dedicating himself,
with ever-increasing indrstry, to the reformulation of Marxism.
