CHEMICAL REACTION

-Chemical reaction is a process in which new substances with new properties are
formed.
-The substances which take part in a chemical reaction are called reactants.
-The new substances produced as a result of chemical reaction are called products.
-In a chemical reaction, the properties of products are entirely different from the
properties of reactants.
Ex: The burning of magnesium in air to form magnesium oxide is an example of
chemical reaction. (2Mg + O2  2MgO)
CHARACTERISTIC OF A CHEMICAL REACTION
The easily observable features which takes place as a result of chemical reaction
are known as characteristics of chemical reaction.
The important characteristic of chemical reactions are:
(i) Evolution of a gas
(ii) Formation of a precipitate
(iii) Change in colour
(iv) Change in Temperature.
(v) Change in state.
CHEMICAL EQUATION:
- The method of representing a chemical reaction with the help of symbols and
formulae of the substances involved in it is known as a chemical equation. It
is a short hand method of representing a chemical reaction.
- The substances which combine or react are known as reactants and always
written on the left-hand side in an equation with a plus sign between them.
- The new substances produced in a reaction are known as products and
always written on the right-hand side in an equation with a plus sign
between them.
- The arrow sign ( ) pointing towards the right hand sight is put between
the reactants & products.
BALANCED CHEMICAL EQUATION :
A chemical equation in which the number of atoms of different elements in the
reactants & Products are same is known as a balanced chemical equation.
A balanced chemical equation has equal masses of various elements in
reactants & products.
Un-BALANCED CHEMICAL EQUATION :
A chemical equation in which the number of atoms of different elements in the
reactants & Products are not same is known as an un-balanced chemical
equation.
An un-balanced chemical equation has different masses of various elements in
reactants & products.
