Barriers to
PRACTICAL
Communication
I. Aim
To identify and understand how barriers hinder the process of
communication.
II. Practical significance
Effective communication enriches one’s personal and professional life
whereas ineffective communication gives rise to problems and
misunderstandings. Communication is effective only when desired
meaning is conveyed to the receiver without distorting any
information/fact. Effective communication is a nerve to all business
activities in all organizations. No matter, how good you are, barriers do
occur, during communication. Many times, some major barriers hinder an
individual’s communication. Hence it is important to know how and
when the barriers may arise and also the methods to overcome them. This
practical will assist the learners in identifying various barriers while
communicating with others and the ways to overcome them. After
performing the practical, the learners will be able to:
● Identify the types and causes of barriers in communication.
● Analyze the effects of barriers on the communication process.
● Know the methods to overcome the barriers during communication.

Classroom activity:
● The teacher can read some information with lots of difficult words, wrong pronunciation,
structural mistakes, wrong voice modulation, etc. Now he/she can ask the students to
identify the barriers and its categories.
● The teacher can ask a student to speak five to ten sentences on any topic and other
students to identify the barriers and its types.

Conclusion: We could identify the various barriers which can hinder the
path of communication. We also learnt the methods to overcome barriers
to communication.
