A.1 Financing of Major, Mini Major and Small-Scale Films

Blockbuster Movie: Top Gun: Maverick

Top Gun: Maverick is an action movie that is a sequel to Top Gun. The movie is based around the Navy
pilots in America that are the best of the best. The Main character from the last Top Gun has got called
back to U.S Navy-fighter weapons school also known as TOPGUN, to instruct and teach a mission that is
deemed to be unflyable. In the first film Maverick flew with Lieutenant Nick ‘goose’ Bradshaw, but he
dead in the first movie in a plane crash, Goose’s son Lieutenant Bradley ‘Rooster’ Bradshaw is one of the
young pilots that he is teaching. Maverick and Rooster must overcome their differences about Roosters
pilot career and his late dad to complete the dangerous mission and get home safe.

Budget

The movie was made in 2022 and the estimated budget was $170,000,000. This is a high budget as it
was targeted at a mass audience. After it was released in cinemas the worldwide gross of this movie was
$1,493,491,858. The reason for this high worldwide gross is because in the movie they had lots of
famous actors such as Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Val Kilmer, Jennifer Conerlly. Also, they had a very big
fan base from the previous movie which would encourage more people to watch the movie as there was
such big hype of the first movie TOPGUN. The reason for the big budget to make this blockbuster movie
is that it takes a lot of people and also takes a lot of planning to be able to produce a movie of this scale,
as well as making it successful. When making this movie, they have to pay for lots of things to even
make filming happen as it would have been impossible to get the most realistic flight scenes without the
G force and the struggle of flying an F/A-18. When making this movie they didn’t use green screens, but
they did use CGI as this is the most sensible thing to do when it can the showing missiles and the runway
blowing up. By using this it makes it more successful, so it is more realistic, and it also makes it more
interesting for the audience. To be able to get these types of shots from within the plane and from that
outside the plane they needed to have the best equipment available to do so and so they could produce
this movie of the highest quality possible. Even though they were only filming in 2 locations across
America it will still mean that they will need to transport the equipment and the props which will come
as a big cost as the for the F/A-18s the cost to put fuel in them was over £5000 and this would only last
an hour. This film was so successful due to the flight scenes, which were made possible due to the
training that the actors had to go through even though they where through the navy they were
substantially expensive so they would need to have the budget planned out for this part of filming the
movie. In my opinion this is what helped to make the film as there is not that many films that could pull
this off was because of the high budget and the aspirations of the director and tom cruise. The reason
that they did all this training was so that the actors would be able to perform a more realistic act, so that
it is more realistic. The equipment that was used was expensive due to the fact that the producers
wanted the cameras to be able produce good quality shots so that the performance was better. In my
opinion this could have impacted the film on how successful it was and how well it did in the box office
because of the quality of the flim and it meant that the audience would find it more relislitic and
something that could relate to in some ways. To shoot this movie they used 1 types of camera with
many different lens, the main cameras that they used Sony Venice camera with was uses in the cockpits
of the planes and considering that there was at least 6 of these in each plane and there is round about 4
planes that would need to be this amount of cameras and that would add up quickly. To even have the
F/A-18s in this movie the U.S Navy charged TOPGUN: maverick over £11,000 per hour that they use the
jets so that may be the reason why it is such a good movie. By using proper Navy Planes, it means that
the movie becomes more realistic due to the fact that the world knows what the U.S main planes are, it
also makes it more realistic as they will have all the details that is supposed to go in that plane as it is the
real one. The reasons for using all this money to create this movie is so that they are able to create a
movie that looks like real life and is enjoyable for the audience, by having a high budget of $170,000,000
it meant that they could do the real life flying which meant that they would be able to show off what the
G- force will look like in real time also it means that the filming will be more enjoyable for the actors
since they will have a better time filming since they have the extra training and the flying.

Equipment in Movie:

The props and filming equipment are all a necessity to make a good high-quality movie that the
audience would like to watch. To shoot this movie they used 11 different cameras so that they could
produce the highest quality of film possible, the main camera that they used during filming is the SONY
VENICE which was used in the cockpits of the planes. The reason that they used this camera when
filming in the cockpit is because it is a full-frame sensor high-end digital cinematography camera. It also
has a wide range of recording formats, and it features Dual Base ISO 500/ISO 2500. The Dual Base ISO is
a multiple base ISO that has two different circuits connected to the camera prossors to extend the
dynamic range and reduce the level of signal noise that has been produced. This means that with the
ISO 500 they can shoot is very high areas and will have a high contrast of colors within the film. The ISO
2500 means that the producers can shoot in very low light, and they will still be able to get the same
amount of quality throughout the movie. This camera also has a optional high frame rate license which
means that the cameras can shoot all of these: 120fps at 4K 2.39:1, 110fps at 4K 17:9, 90fps at 6K 2.39:1,
60fps at 6K 3:2, 72fps at 6K 1.85:1 and 75fps at 4k 4:3 with anamorphic license. The camera cost around
$58,000 because of all these extra features that is on it and it is the most recent release from Sony so
therefore it is the best on the market. This helps to make the movie successful as there will be high
quality shots from within the camera to help immerse the audience within the movie, also it helps the
movie to become more real and less like it is only a movie it makes it feel like it is actually happening
somewhere in that world. The one of the Lense that they used is they Zeiss Loxia though out the movie,
they use 4 different millimeter lenses which are 21mm, 25 mm, 35mm, 50 mm. The purpose of these
lenses is to be able to get close ups and long shots and distant shots of what is happening with in the
scene, they also used these because they are light weight so that they would not make a difference to
the way that the plane is flown with the extra weight in the plane. By using these types of equipment, it
means that the movie will be more realistic therefore more enjoyable for the audience, Also by using
this many different types of lenses it will give it more of a close up feel to what is happening and to the
characters as you will get to see them in many different aspects of the movie. Top Gun: Maverick - Six

Company Credits:

The Company that produced this movie was Paramount pictures, SkyDance media and Jerry
Bruckheimer Films. The biggest production company that worked on this movie is Paramount Pictures
with their net worth about $1.96 billion. Paramount pictures have a website and app which the
customers can watch the movies when then there is also the fact that they have a partnership with
Amazon so that paramount movies can also be accessed by Amazon Prime viewers. Paramount is the
fifth oldest surviving film studio in the world, it is also the last major film studio still headquartered in
the Hollywood district of Los Angeles. Paramount was the first successful nationwide Distibutor, until
this, films were sold on a statewide or regional basis which had proved costly to film producers.
SkyDance is the second biggest production company in this movie with a net worth of $18 million so
therefore they have a lot of people, and a lot of actors will want to work with the company. By these
company's producing this movie will make It more successful as more people will know It is a good
movie due to the production companies. On top of SkyDance film productions they also have SkyDance

Location:

In this movie there were 13 different locations that they filmed in. They filmed the whole movie within
the USA. For the main flying scenes where they were actually flying and not filmed on the ground, they
were filmed in Eldorado National Forest, Sirra District State Parks, South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County.
The reason they picked these places to film is not only because of their natural beauty is that not a lot of
members of the public will be there due to it being just a vast area. By doing this it meant that the public
risk would be low and also not many of the public would be able to see them filming this movie so then
it will inspire them to watch it when it came out in the cinema. The on-land scenes were shot at Naval
Air stations at: Whidbey Island, Lemoore, Fallon, North Island. These locations are from when the pilots
are doing their training for the mission, the reason why these are all navy air bases is so that the
producers can make the movie look as realistic to the navy as possible and it being filmed in these
locations really help. The other locations that are on land are 4000 Bluff PL which is a house of one of
the characters in the movie and the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery this is because it is a well-
respected navy graveyard, so this is the most fitting place for the funeral of the well-respected Adriamal
of ICEMAN. In order for the case to be at all these locations they would have to fly the cast and crew
around the locations when a scene needed to be shot. This also means that filming in different locations
would mean that there is a higher risk of injury as something could happen between locations. With all
these locations it helps to make the movie more successful as people would see those locations and will
want to visit them so there for making it an all-round more popular movie. Also having all of these navel
locations will have an impact on people who are or where in the navy as they will be remind of there
service and it will also give the younger generation something to inspire too as they have seen what it
could be like.

Casting:

In this type of movie, they have to be very selective with their cast due to the fact that the train to be
able to fly the planes for the shoots. The Main character of this movie is Tom Cruise, the reason for this
is because he was in the original movie of TOPGUN. The other main cast that was in the last movie is Val
Kilmer, Charles Parnell, they have recast these so that the story line will fit better, and the audience will
understand the characters more. The reason they have been recasting these people is so that the
audience still has some connection with the characters in the movie. The new main characters are Miles
Teller, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, Jay Ellis, Danny Ramirez, Glen Powell, Greg Tarzan Davis. These
are all the actors that were picked due to the fact that they would be able to withstand the training to
fly these aircraft. These actors are all up and coming actors so therefore this movie will make them more
successful as they will have more clout. They have also picked the younger actors so that they can reach
a much wider audience of the younger generation. This means that there will be a higher amount of
younger people also i will attract different types of people that are possible fans of the actors that have
been casted for this movie.

Crew:

The Director that produced this movie is Joseph Kosinski, before this movie he had produced Only the
Brave, Oblivion and TRON: legacy. These were big movies when they can out as one of them are for
Disney. He has also won many awards for Top Gun Maverick such as the Sant Jordi Award and the
Camerimage award, by winning these awards show that he is one of the reasons why the movie was so
successful. By having a director that has done some big movies and having a good reputation it means
that the movie will have a better reputation from the making as the director as won many awards for
similar movies of this genre. The writing credits for this movie were done by Jim Cash, Jack Epps Jr, Peter
Craig, Justin Marks, Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer and Christopher McQuarrie. These people also
helped the movie come to life as they are the people that helped to write the story and help with the
screen play. When filming this movie, they also had different fight crew to fly the planes while they were
filming in the cockpits therefore that is another part of the crew is the flying crew. By having crew that
has worked on a lot of big movies it means that they have a lot of experience on how to film a movie like
this, this also means they know how to target the right audience for this movie

Mini-Major: Thank you for your service

This film is about war veterans coming home from Iraq, the main character Adam is a sergeant and has
come home to his family and children. It is all about his struggle on how he is integrating back into
normal life and trying to fight with his haultianations and the flash backs of the war in Iraq. It also shows
us the struggle of getting mental help as a veteran and how that most veterans like him try and commit
suicide.

Budget:

The movie was made in 2017 and had a budget of $20,000,000. This is a big but small budget as this is
targeted for a mass audience due to the fact it is on Netflix. After it was released in cinema the gross
worldwide for this movie was $9,995,692. The reason for this worldwide gross is that when it was
released it was around the time of the Iraq wars so therefore there was people that was interested
about what it was like and also there was other people that wanted to watch just because of the
phycological effects that the movie shows. Another reason for the worldwide gross is that they cast
Miles Teller who is a well-known actor in that year that the movie came out. The reason for this medium
sized budget is that they need a lot of planning to be able to produce a movie that Netflix would what to
have on their list of films for the customers. When making this movie they had to pay out for a lot of
things like Props, sets, CGI and many other things. The CGI that was used in the movie would have cost a
lot due to the fact that they would have had to use a green screen for some of the shots. The bugdet for
this movie is low due to any other movies this is because they didn’t us that many sets or locations due
to the it was all filmed in Atlanta, Georgia in the USA this meant that there was no big travel expenses
for the crew and equipment so therefore the budget is lower. I think this is another reason why it is
successful as they kept the cost down and filmed in places that looked very similar so then there will be
a connection with in all the scenes. The impact that the $20,000,000 budget had on the movie it meant
that they had more money to be able to make a higher quality of movie and help to make it more
realistic, so that it will have more an appeal to the audience. This also means that if they want to spend
a lot of money on a piece of equipment or locations it means they might have to cut the budgets
somewhere else. By having a budget this size means that they should have enough money to make it as
real as possible, and they have done this in the final released product of this movie.

Equipment:
To film this movie, they used 1 camera and 3 Lense. The first camera they used was an Arri Alexa XT
Plus, this is a digital motion picture camera that was developed by Arri. It is a very versatile camera that
can cover a wide range of workflow and gives a good image. It has an integrated wireless receiver for
camera and lens remote control. It has built-in tilt and roll sensers and additional converters to make the
camera as versatile as possible. The Camera has ARRIRAW recording with means that they can film with
no filter, it also has a 4: 3 super 35 sensor with means that they will be able to get more high-quality
footage which will help contribute to the movie's success. The First lenses that they used was a
Panavision C series which is a lightweight, compact anamorphic lens. It is characterized by a graduated
depth of field, predictable full-field performance that helps to pronounce an anamorphic Flare within
the Shot. This lens is well suited for handheld and Steadicam which is probably what they have used in
the movie. They also used the Panavision E, which is very similar to the C series, but the E series offers
an improved optical quality, more sophisticated anti-reflection coating, newer spherical components
and a refined optical spherical component. Its key features are that it has minimal fall off on the edges of
the frame therefore leading to a much cleaner shot. It also has a close focus distances range from 3 feet
6 inches to 5 feet. The last lenses that they used is the Panavision T series which is yet again one up from
the last one. This lens has high contrast, balance aberration control, excellent glare resistance and there
tightly controlled anamorphic squeeze ratio. The typical speed of T2.3 and close focus of 2 feet and has
engraved focus and t-stop scales on both sides of the lens. By using this equipment, it means that they
can get a high quality of footage therefore resulting in a more successful movie with a medium to low
budget. Also by using this type of equipment it means that they will be able to get different types of
shots can be used and help to make the film realistic and from the soldier's point of view.

Dreamworks Pictures is the biggest production company that produced this movie, as they have a net
worth of $3.6 million and have made over 44 movies and animations. The reason the movie was
successful is because there is a lot of money that can back up this movie, this means that if the movie
did fail then the DreamWorks company could support it. Reliance Entertainment is an Indian media
Entertaiment with in this company they help make and remake movies into different languages and
tailoring to their culture. The last company to be working on this movie is Dune Films and they are part
of warner brothers. They are also based out of Morocco, and they are location services and facilities so
therefore they help to find locations and services for the cast and crew. By having these 3 different
production compaines working on this movie they will all be able to have their own input on the movie
to make it link to them. Which will help movie fanatics be able to identify who made the movie and will
help it more apperling to the audience.

Location:

The only 2 location that has been listed that they film in Alanta Georgia in the USA as this is big Army
Bases which I am guessing they filmed in. And the Dixie Speedway, Woodstock which is in Georgia.
Although we don’t know much about the locations, we can say that they locations had to be picked very
carefully due to the fact that they need to get the right military locations for the movie as it should be
somewhat realistic of where they go to get the mental help they need. This helps to make the movie
more successful by using real bases so that people who are watching can see what the military is like.
Also, by using the bases it will not be a made set so that all the background will be real so the actor can
get in there characters and give a better performance for the audience. This also means that the
locations will not be recognized by lot of members of the audience as it there is a lot of army locations,
this means that the audience will feel more immersed into the movie since the locations will be more
unrecogniseable.

Casting:

For this movie the producers had to cast people that would be able to portray characters that have
these mental illnesses from the war in Iraq. The Casting people also had to keep in mind that when they
filmed this movie, they would have to look like they had just come out of battle which means they have
to look like they have muscles and have gone through some physical trauma. For the main character
they cast Miles Teller who Played Adam Schumann, the reason I think they did cast him into this role is
because within his acting he can be very powerful and is good at playing someone with authority as he
can produce that power within his voice. The next main character that was a soldier is Beulah Koale
character named Tausolo Aieti. By casting this actor meant that they were representing different
ethnicities within the movie and the US army. These two characters are the main characters due to the
fact that they have a lot of screen time and that they go find help together. This means by having these
characters have lot of screen time will mean that the audience will be able to have a stronger
connection with the characters as they are seeing them and bonding with them on the screen. By
casting these character helped the movies become successful due to the fact at this time they was all up
coming actors. Also, having the character having a lot of screen time will help the movie become more
successful as the audience will become more attached then the audience might recommend the movie
because of the actors so it will be more successful.

The director of this movie was Jason Hall, who wrote the story for this movie and then directed it as he
is a writer and an actor, so he knows what he is doing. He is known for 3 main movies ‘American sniper’,
‘Thank you for your service’ and ‘spread’ as these are his biggest movies that he has written or acted in.
As an Actor and Writer, he has been nominated for 15 awards for the many different movies he has

The Writing credits go to David Finkel who is known for Thank you for your service, Area peligrosa. David
helped to write the movie with Jason Hall as David already had experience with writing war related
movies. Having Jason Hall as the director it means that he is already known as a director as he has done
previous movies, this could help the success of this movie due to the fact the audience might want to
what is movie to see the work he has done. This means that there would be a fair amount of fame to the
movie in the cinimatic industy as this director help this movie win awards due to he was already very
well known in the industry.

Small-scale flim: The Breakfast Club:

The breakfast club is about 5 teenagers that have all got a Saturday detention, they all have their
differences due to the fact there was one quiet shy gothic girl, smart academic boy, popular girl, sports
jock, and the outside. They have all been giving this detention for different reasons and at the start they
all have their differences, and they don’t get on due to this but after they have been in the same room
for hours, they start to get to know each other and realize they have much more in common than they
might have thought originally.

Budget:

The budget for this movie was estimated to be $1,000,000 which means it is a low budget movie. Even
though it is a low budget movie the worldwide gross that the movie made was $51,525,171 so they
made a lot of profit off of this movie as it was such a success. The budget of this movie is very low due to
the fact that it is an old movie as it came out in 1985, this meant that there was not a lot of expensive
high-tech camera equipment or sets. A reason for this high worldwide gross is that many people might
not have seen a movie like this before where it is mainly set in one room and also at the time that this
movie was released there was only war, romance and silent movies so having this movie in color and
have it about something that is about school kids in detention what different to what people are used to
and there has never been a movie like it since. The budget was also low due to the fact that they only
had to hire out one place to film as it was all based in a school and on the grounds of the school. To
make the film they only used one camera and 2 lenses that helped to keep the budget down by a lot.
They also didn’t need to spend that much money on the costumes for the movie as they never changed
outfit only until the last scene where one-character changes their outfit but that is it. By having this
budget made the flim more successful due to the fact that it was so basic, but at that time that is what
was difference in the film industry. Also by only having $1,000,000 it meant that the flim was not very
high tech and more like what people would use everyday. By doing this it shows to the audience that
you don’t have to have the most expensive equipment or location to be able to produce a good movie.

The Breakfast Club (1985) - IMDb

Equipment:

To film this movie, they only used one camera and 2 lenses. The camera that they used was the
Panavision panaflex Gold 35mm Camera. The Panaflex Gold was introduced to the company in 1972,
with revolutionized motion picture cinematography. This type of camera was lightweight and compact,
it allowed greater freedom of movement than any existing camera. As this camera is of old technology
this means that there is not that much information on it due to the fact there is a lot more modern
technology now and Panavision has discontinued this camera. One of the lenses that was used was the
Panavision Super Speed which was introduced in the 1970s to supplement the standard primes while
providing higher performance and faster apertures. The next Lense that they used is the Panavision ultra
speed, this lens was introduced in the mid –1970s and offers focal lengths from 14 mm to 150 mm with
lens speed from T1 to T1.9 and close-focus distances from 2 feet to 5 feet. The reason they have used
this type of equipment is because they wanted to get a close realistic look of characters and the school
so that the audience would feel more immersed in the scenes. In my opinion, I think the cameras played
a big part of the movie as they was able to move with the cameras so that the audience will be able to
become closer to the characters within the movie.

Location:

For this movie they only used 3 locations due to the fact it was all based in the school, to film this movie
they used Maine North High School and Glen north High school in Illinois in the USA. This was the only
seat they had, and they only used a couple places in the school as well, they used the library, an office,
halls, sports hall and a storage room. The last place they filmed was in a football field in Park Ridge. This
was where the fist pump scene happened, which was also the last scene in the whole movie. By only
using very little locatons it is able to help the audience to get closer to the characters as they will be
focusing on the characters and not the location. This helps to make it more successful as there will be
more places for the audience to relate to.

The Breakfast Club (1985) - Filming & production - IMDb

Casting:

For this movie they had to cast actors that were young so they could portray school teens that are in
detention. In this movie there is only 7 characters that we see constantly without the movie as they are
the children in detention and the headmaster. The cast that was chosen where all actors that had
already been in some movies but they weren’t big celebrity's, the reason for this was because if they
had put celebrities in this movie the characters would not feel as real but if they used upcoming actors
then the audience would get that feeling like they are actual school kids. Before filming the breakfast
club, paul Gleason who played Richard Vernon the headmaster, he was a well-known actor due to the
fact he had done many movies prior to doing this one, so therefore he would have a fan base. The teens
Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy all played the
children that were in detention. By doing this and having upcoming actors means that the audience
might be able to relate to the characters as they are not famous and people don’t know there
background might help it become more successful.
