What is an Eclipse?
- An Eclipse is when an object in space,
like the moon, blocks the light of the
Sun from reaching the Earth for a short
amount of time
- Eclipses happen every 1 to 3 years, but
some of them are only visible from the
North and South Pole or the middle of
the ocean.
 What is a Solar Eclipse?
- The Moon ends up between
the Sun and Earth, blocking
the light of the Sun from
reaching Earth.
- The Moon has to be a New
Moon
- Solar eclipses only last a
couple of minutes

What is a Lunar Eclipse?
- The Earth blocks the light of
the Sun from the Moon
- Lunar eclipses can only
happen on a full moon
- The Umbra is the darkest part
of the Earth’s shadow → full

- The Penumbra is the less dark
part of the Earth’s shadow
Phases of the Moon
 Partial vs. Total Eclipse
A partial solar eclipse happens when
the Moon passes in between the Sun
and Earth but the three don’t line up
perfectly. A total solar eclipse is when
all three line up perfectly. Solar eclipses
can only occur during the day.
A partial lunar eclipse happens when the
Earth is in between the Moon and the
Sun but the three don’t line up perfectly.

line up perfectly. Lunar eclipses can only
occur during the night.

You can not look straight into a solar
eclipse without eye protection!
- The Sun can burn your eyes and
destroy the cells within your
eyes that help your brain
process what you see.
- Even during an eclipse, the Sun
can still reach your eyes and
hurt them

You can look straight into a lunar
eclipse without eye protection!
- Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar
eclipse is the moon being lit up
by Earth’s light alone
- Lunar eclipse and the moon
itself are both safe to look at
with the naked eye!
Fun Facts
- The moon is orange during a total
lunar eclipse because the only light
reaching the Moon is passing
through Earth’s atmosphere,
where there is dust and clouds
- The longest duration for a total
solar eclipse possible is 7.5
minutes
- Animals become confused by the
temporary light change during a
solar eclipse
- A lunar eclipse occurs when the
Moon and Sun are on the exact
opposites of the Earth
