Literary Criticism

1 Formalist/Structuralist
Approach
4 Feminist Criticism
2 Moralist/Humanistic
Approach
5 Historical Approach
3 Marxist Literary
Criticism
Formalist/Structuralist Approach

This method examines the form or

structure of every single element in a
story. It gives readers a means of
appreciating and comprehending a piece
of writing for its own worth as a literary
art.
Formalist/Structuralist Approach
Guide Questions
a. How do elements conspire or work together?

b. How does the conflict affect the characters’

actions?

c. What do the objects, events, images or actions

symbolize?
Moralist/Humanistic Approach

This approach often questions the

goodness and badness. Under moralist
criticism, a literary text is expected to
have traditionally held moral values.
Moralist/Humanistic Approach
Guide Questions
a. Is a practical, moral, or ethical idea being
presented?

b. How does the text play out given ethical principles?

c. Does the work seem to build a positive or negative

influence on its readers?
Marxist Literary Criticism
Marxist literary criticism looks into how
literature functions within the class struggle.
A method of criticism that examines all
societies and their writings in light of
particular issues, such as race, class, and the
norms and attitudes that are common to a
particular culture.
Marxist Literary Criticism
Guide Questions
a. Who benefits from the production and acceptance of
literary work?

b. What social class is the author part of?

c. What social class does the work supposedly represent?

d. What values (diligence, equality, self-sacrifice, etc.) does

it reinforce?
Feminist Criticism
The feminist criticism approach examines the
impact of gender in writing and reading. In this
approach, the readers look at the ways that the
literature reinforces the oppression of women in
any area of life.
This criticism removes myths about feminism, which
does not support women's dominance or
superiority over men.
Feminist Criticism
Guide Questions
a. How is the relationship between men and women portrayed in
the text?

b. What are the power relationships present between men and

women (or characters assuming such roles) in the text?

c. How are the roles for males and females defined?

d. What constitutes masculinity and femininity?

Historical Approach
This method recognizes the connection between the
work and history.
The basis for understanding a work is its historical
value and the work's influence on history. It views
literature as a reflection of the times and places it
was written in, as well as a creation of those times
and places.
Historical Approach
Guide Questions
a. What language or elements in the work reflect the "current events" of
the author's day?

b. How have these events been interpreted and presented by the

author?

c. How are these interpretations reflective of the author's culture?

d. Does the presentation in the work support or condemn a particular

event, or leading political figures of its time? Can the work be seen to do
both?
