Role summary

The Sustainability Group offers a wide range of design transforming


services to our projects at city, building and product scale. You will work
from London on some of the most exciting projects throughout the world.
Sustainability is a complex area with multiple interrelated and interactive
data and relationships, and realistic, comprehensive and engaging
visualisation is a key means to explain the subsect matter and decision
pathways. You will be a member of a dynamic sustainability group and will
focus on developing real-time, interactive digital media in Unreal Engine
for systematically generating, managing, and transforming quantitative
data as well as presenting these data in association with interactive 3D
digital forms. In collaborations with architects, engineers, and 3D artists,
you will build digital twins that simulate real world scenarios for optimising
design and in-use support of buildings, master plans, cities and products.
This is an inventive and fast developing area requiring the ability to apply
integrated systems thinking in immersive person-environment contexts to
develop models to optimise multi-dimensional parametric problems.

Job Title: Sustainability Designer/Modeller (Unreal Engine focus)
Reporting to: Senior Project Leads and Head of
Sustainability

Responsibilities

• To develop and apply rigorous and data driven algorithmic workflows to support the
research of existing and emerging sustainable data sets, systems, tools and models

• Application of these techniques to the analysis and evaluation of architectural designs and
mock-ups

• Producing convincing visual outputs and reports to explain and advocate sustainable
design direction.

• To assist in developing other colleagues, and where necessary, collaborators to achieve


these goals

• To contribute to developing inter-operability with other tools used by colleagues in Foster +


Partners.

• To record evidence of continued training

• To have thorough knowledge of and compliance with Foster + Partners procedures and
standards

• To contribute, or otherwise assist, as required

Qualities and skills required


• A passion for sustainability and committed to the development of sustainability thinking

• Applying numerical systems-based optimisation techniques to sustainable design,


manufacture and construction
• A basic understanding of international climate policy; including but not limited to the Paris
Climate Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and passion to develop
this.

• Ability to communicate complex technical information in an engaging non-technical manner

• Having a flexible attitude and building good relationships at all levels, internally and
externally

• Having a proven record of training and educating and developing skills in others

• Design and develop workflows to store, retrieve, and utilize multiple types of data stored in
Unreal arrays, sets, structures, and maps.

• Set up and optimize game levels with dynamic direct and indirect lighting settings in Unreal
Engine

• Develop customizable Blueprint actors that can generate and evaluate instanced static
meshes spawned in response to prescribed/runtime quantitative inputs in Unreal Engine

• Develop varied human-computer interactions through expandable, interactive 2D/3D user


widget interfaces in Unreal Engine

• Build libraries of functions and macros that can be applied in multiple Unreal projects

Desirable
• Set up and optimize real-time raytracing scenes and utilize Lumen in Unreal Engine 5

• Design and develop characters and spectator pawns for varied simulation purposes.

• Utilize Niagara and other VFX systems to develop animated visual effects

• Design and create advanced shaders for special visual effects

• Interoperate Unreal Engine with other 3D programs such as Rhinoceros, Blender, and Houdini

• Develop and optimize Unreal projects for Android and iOS platforms as well as AR/VR/XR platforms

• Connect Unreal Engine to empirical data with live feeds from building management systems,
sensors, and cameras

• Connect Unreal Engine to planetary climate data, and similar, from services such as Climate Engine
and NASA

• Develop a framework for assessing viewer health and wellbeing including using wearables that
track a person's eyes, heart rate, and face, or other comparable methods

This description reflects the core activities of the role but is not intended to be
all-inclusive and other duties within the group/department may be required in addition
to changes in the emphasis of duties as required from time to time. There is a
requirement for the post holder to recognise this and adopt a flexible approach
to work. Job descriptions will be reviewed regularly and where necessary revised
in accordance with organisational needs. Any major changes will be discussed with
