Role definition
Job Title: Sustainability Designer/Modeller (Unreal Engine focus)
Reporting to: Senior Project Leads and Head of
Sustainability
Responsibilities
• To develop and apply rigorous and data driven algorithmic workflows to support the
research of existing and emerging sustainable data sets, systems, tools and models
• Application of these techniques to the analysis and evaluation of architectural designs and
mock-ups
• Producing convincing visual outputs and reports to explain and advocate sustainable
design direction.
• To have thorough knowledge of and compliance with Foster + Partners procedures and
standards
• Having a flexible attitude and building good relationships at all levels, internally and
externally
• Having a proven record of training and educating and developing skills in others
• Design and develop workflows to store, retrieve, and utilize multiple types of data stored in
Unreal arrays, sets, structures, and maps.
• Set up and optimize game levels with dynamic direct and indirect lighting settings in Unreal
Engine
• Develop customizable Blueprint actors that can generate and evaluate instanced static
meshes spawned in response to prescribed/runtime quantitative inputs in Unreal Engine
• Build libraries of functions and macros that can be applied in multiple Unreal projects
Desirable
• Set up and optimize real-time raytracing scenes and utilize Lumen in Unreal Engine 5
• Design and develop characters and spectator pawns for varied simulation purposes.
• Utilize Niagara and other VFX systems to develop animated visual effects
• Interoperate Unreal Engine with other 3D programs such as Rhinoceros, Blender, and Houdini
• Develop and optimize Unreal projects for Android and iOS platforms as well as AR/VR/XR platforms
• Connect Unreal Engine to empirical data with live feeds from building management systems,
sensors, and cameras
• Connect Unreal Engine to planetary climate data, and similar, from services such as Climate Engine
and NASA
• Develop a framework for assessing viewer health and wellbeing including using wearables that
track a person's eyes, heart rate, and face, or other comparable methods
