What the SONOS brief allowed me to do was create my own idea
for a brief. I had to try and get into the headspace of a someone
commisioning a design for sonos and try to figure out what SONOS
want ther customers to think of them. I started Identifying aspects of
their brand and sketchinng as I went
Interaction in any
space

SONOS uses minimal silhouettes

and their neutral colour palette
to make sure the focus is on
creating an atmosphere, not
being visually striking.

SONOS locks themselves out of a decent chunk of the market with

their price range, they compensate with minimal forms and colours
that feel at home wherever they are. This also makes sure the focus is
on the atmosphre created by their speakers, not the speakers them-
selves.
Sociability

SONOS products are meant for

groups of people, movie nights
or music at a party. Their designs
are interactive, with LEDs pulsing
for volume changes and an app
that the user involves themselves
in directly. Not only this, but
the linkability of their products
creates a larger scope for their
use, involving everyone in a
house rather than everyne in one
room. Their elemental shapes
are familiar, this familiartity
makes interaction more intuitive
because we feel we already
understand the product.
Exclusivity and
premium production

Many companies work to create

an aspirational brand that builds
on but goes beyond physical
features of their products. One
way SONOS does this is their
app, an exclusive space that only
their users access, another is
their use of music professionals
to curate their sound to leave
customers with the feel of
premium quality and lastly
the explanation of the making
process itself on their website
to immerse a reader in their
processes.
I experimented with some more
Ideas based around tactility and
interaction, while also keeping any
forms minimal and inoffensive.

The aim was to create something

that people want to interact with,
this included more concrete things
like shape and how the switching
mechanism, wit a light that twists on
and off, but also less tangible things
like the sense of quality we get from
products with a certain weight.

New Iteration
For the elementary shapes
design, the battery pack I was
using to build the lamp was too
large to fit in a product the shape
and size of the current design. I
decided on a design with a taller
form more reminiscent other
SONOS’ ERA speakers.

I also felt that my candle holder

design was too playful for
SONOS and so decided that
if I was not more interested in
it after modelling that I would
scrap the idea and move on.
