Chapter 1: Introduction.
1.1. Background.
1.2. Problem Statement.
1.3. Aim.
The aim of this assignment is to assess different failure modes and possible causes of these failure
modes in a stop sign then present possible recommendations that could help prevent failure of the stop
sign.

1.4. Objectives.
The following set of objectives were developed for the aim to be achieved:

 To conduct literature survey to determine different failure modes associated with the pole.
 To point out different loads that the stop sign is subjected to.
 To estimate the size of the loads and calculate the stresses the structure is subjected to.
 To assess the induced stress state at points A and B using an appropriate coordinate system.
 To present a set of recommendations to prevent failure of the pole.

1.5. Report Overview.

Chapter 1 of this report presented the background information of the stop sign, the problem that is
being assessed, the aim of this paper and the objectives to ensure that the aim is met. Chapter 2 of the
report will present a comprehensive literature survey of the failure modes of these structures and the
possible causes of these poles. Chapter 3 of the report will then conduct an in-depth analysis of the
structure presenting the loads this structure is subjected to and the stresses at points A and B. Chapter
4 which is the last chapter of the report will present the conclusion and recommendations by
presenting notable observations and concluding the report and then presenting recommendations to
prevent failure of the pole.
Chapter 2: Literature Review.
2.1. Opening Remarks.

Chapter 3: Analysis.
3.1. Opening Remarks.
3.2. Failure Analysis.
3.3. Calculations.
3.4. Closing Remarks.

Chapter 4: Conclusion and Recommendations.

4.1. Opening Remarks.
4.2. Conclusion.
4.3. Recommendations.
