Reflection Essay 1 for Annotated Bibliography Final Draft

In this first writing assignment, Annotated Bibliography, where I learned how to

accurately locate and credit peer-reviewed journal articles in academic research by using the

“Library Research Packet” assignment, allowing me to have an insight into what keywords would

be recommended to me to use in a database search (Academic Search Ultimate). This

assignment required me to follow the rules and regulations set in “Research Genre 1,” allowing

me to use the following keywords: “Optometry,” “Children,” “Vision,” and “Disease” (Ramos,

“Library Research Packet”). Creating Draft 1 for the Annotated Bibliography taught me the

difference between academic and popular source writings (Ramos). The different assignments

given to me allowed me to understand what was needed from me to execute the assignment as

well as possible. I knew what to put because of the information shared with me in the in-class

activities with Dr. Nelson and the video on how to find a keyword on database search engines.

The assignments on spotting correct referencing from improper referencing did help me greatly,

giving me a better idea of how to give credit to those who wrote the peer-reviewed journals

correctly.

By Creating this annotated bibliography, I discovered that I could apply this knowledge

about academic research to my biology courses and English course; by knowing how to create

proper notation, I can start where it is done and avoid plagiarism; for example, in Dr. Nelson had

us exam each other’s work in I was able to practice in looking for errors in someones annotated

bibliography. This annotated bibliography can help me deal with giving proper credit to those

who deserve credit so that their work can be honed and so that I don’t get marked for

plagiarism.

By conferencing and receiving feedback from Dr. Nelson, I was able to understand better

what I needed to work on so I could improve my annotated bibliography; some key elements

that I changed from my first draft were the lack of double spacing, I was able to fix this by

adding double space through the paper another element I had changed was the high word

count I had per peer-reviewed paper, I averaged around 230 words per section during my

drafting phase, and once meeting with Dr. Nelson I dropped down to 200 or less per section.

By peer-reviewing with a classmate, I was able to see errors that were not caught when

reviewing my paper during the first revising phase. Several elements were improved on thanks

to the peer review; for example, grammatical mistakes and errors in punctuation were spotted

and then corrected. I made changes in both elements by going back and re-reviewing my work.

The most challenging aspect of the writing assignment was meeting the word count.

With so much information taken from the peer-reviewed papers, I found it difficult to phare

phrase all the information into only 200 words. The least challenging aspect of this assignment

was to see what to source; I found it very easy; everything that needed to be cited could be

found by clicking on the peer-reviewed article and searching. Patience was the only that was

required of me here.
