A FILM REVIEW: „The Help“

Ema Lončar, 3.c

Great book, even better movie, but sad truth!

If I had to choose a phenomenal, breathtaking and touching film, I would choose “The
Help“. I loved it, and so did Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Everyone should be
familiar with the historical storyline that this movie brings us.

The movie is set in Mississippi around the 1960s. The main storyline follows the life of
an African-American maids who face injustice, racism and disrespect while carefully raising the
children of the white families they work for. The storyline also follows courage and braveness of
a white woman, Eugenia Phelan, who gave them a chance to speak up through a book about their
difficult life.

What I really loved about the film is that the director, Tate Tylor, paid attention to even
the smallest detail, such as the incorrect use of English in the speech of an African-American
maids because they were not educated enough. I thought the acting was first-class, with an
amazing, Oscar winning performance from Octavia Spencer. As well, this nicely made film deals
with a serious problem such as racism, which unfortunately is still present today.

All in all, this is a terrific film with a strong message. I would recommend it to anyone
who wants to know more about the life of an African-American in the 1960s.
