Playing in the rain might be fun, but playing with lightning is an entirely different story. It is common
knowledge that being struck by lightning will lead to severe long-term injuries and even a painful death for the
unlucky victim. Therefore, it is vital that you know what to do to stay safe during a lightning storm.
The first and most important thing to remember is that if you can hear thunder, you are within striking
distance of lightning. Take shelter immediately, preferably in a house or all-metal car. If you are caught outside
far from a safe shelter, try your best to stay away from tall objects, such as trees, poles, wires and fences and
take shelter in a low lying area.
While it is safer to be indoors when there is lightning, you must still be vigilant and take precautions.
Stay away from electrical appliances and equipment, doors, windows, fireplaces, and anything else that will
conduct electricity, such as sinks, tubs and showers. Avoid using a telephone that is connected to a landline or
touching devices that are plugged in for charging. This is because lightning can travel through electrical
systems, radio and television reception systems, and any metal wires or bars in concrete walls or flooring.
Going outside right after there is no more lightning is also not recommended. To be absolutely sure
that you are safe, remain in your house or shelter for 30 minutes after the last lightning flash of the storm. After
this point, it should really be over and you should be able to resume your normal outdoor activities without
worry. However, if the sky starts to darken and clouds begin to form overhead, or if you hear thunder or see
lightning again, go back inside immediately.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct

Whether it’s a desire for stellar grades at school or a flawless and attractive appearance, the desire for
everything to be perfect, or perfectionism, often drives teens to be hard on themselves.
Striving for perfection is a good source of motivation, but it can also be a recipe for mental health
issues. We know from research on mental health that “self-critical perfectionism”, in which you set high
standards for yourself and criticize yourself when you don’t meet them, is strongly linked to depression and
anxiety. This is very different from “personal standards perfectionism,” which is unrelated to depression and
anxiety, and simply means setting high goals for yourself without the harsh self-criticism. So the key is to help
teens see that it’s possible to have high standards for themselves while at the same time treating themselves
kindly.
. This is where self-compassion can help. Self-compassion is being aware that you’re struggling,
understanding that difficult emotions like anger and disappointment, are normal and then taking an active role
in supporting yourself when you feel them. In short, self-compassion teaches us to treat ourselves with
kindness rather than beating ourselves up when we experience failure, and research has shown that this
actually works. In one study among teens in Australia, for example, when teens were more self-compassionate,
being perfectionistic was less likely to lead to depression. The same thing happened in another study on
Chinese teens: those who were more self-compassionate were less likely to be depressed, and self-compassion
buffered the negative effects of unhealthy perfectionism.
The good news is that it is entirely possible for teens to learn to be more self-compassionate. This
process starts from understanding two essential things. Firstly, they don’t have to treat themselves harshly to
gain motivation. Secondly, others are struggling just like them, something that may seem obvious to adults but
not to youngsters who often feel like they are the only ones struggling, and that their peers are all confident
and happy. Furthermore, teens can learn short meditation practices that they can do whenever they are upset
or anxious, and longer meditation practices that they can do when they have the time.
