Annual Examination Prospectus, 2022

PERFORMANCE EXAMINATION (15%)


- held during your scheduled Music class a week prior to the Annual Examination session.

Instrumentalists or boys who learn singing:


• Prepare a piece to play on the instrument that you learn (maximum time 3 minutes). You must not perform a
piece you have already used in a performance examination at College Street.

Boys who do not learn an instrument:


• Prepare ONE performance task provided on a separate sheet.

** Any boy who is not organised to perform on his scheduled day (without good reason and/or prior approval from the class teacher) will receive
an automatic 2-mark deduction. **

WRITTEN EXAMINATION (85%)


– held during the Annual Examination session.

Generally, this exam will ask similar questions to those asked in class, either verbally or in your workbooks. A
familiarity with The Concepts of Music terminology is essential. Music will be chosen from the set works* that
you have studied and from other pieces that have similar musical features. Other terminology from the workbook
will also be covered including Stage & Screen p42.

Aural/Listening
• Pitch patterns and rhythm dictations
• Recognising major/minor chords and distinguishing them from other chords
• Major, Minor (natural/harmonic), Chromatic
• Melodic shape/contour
• Completing a melody dictation
• Intervals: maj/min 2nd, maj/min 3rd, perf 4th, perf 5th, maj/min 6th, maj/min 7th, perf 8ve
• Compound/Simple Time signatures
• Responding to questions about pieces played to you with appropriate terminology or observations

Theory/Composition
• Clefs: notes in treble and bass clef, ledger lines
• Key system/ Key signatures and scales of the following keys: C, F, G, D major and A, D, E minor
• Major, Minor (natural, harmonic) scales in the keys listed above
• Chords I, IV and V in the major keys mentioned above
• Anacrusis, syncopation, ostinato/riff, arpeggio
• Compound/Simple Time Signatures, French time names
• Notes, rests, dynamics
• Intervals: maj/min 2nd, maj/min 3rd, perf 4th, perf 5th, maj/min 6th, maj/min 7th, perf 8ve
• Compositional devices: sequence, imitation, repetition, ostinato, pedal point
• Italian & English terms/signs used in the scores studied
• Understanding of basic chord symbols

Performance Examination for boys who do not learn an instrument

PERFORMANCE TASK /15:


Choose ONE of the following pieces to perform. You can either sing the excerpt or play it on the piano.
Marks will be awarded for fluency, accuracy of rhythm and pitch. Recordings and film clips are available on
Schoology.
