The Echoes of Cold war: Analysing diplomacy tactics and strategies during

cold war

1. Abstract
With the end of world war II, everything was set for yet another collision. The
US spearheaded the west bloc, while the soviets championed the east bloc. The
USA is equipped with capitalism and democracy. On the other hand, the soviet
union was a big socialist and communist that had a penchant for the eastern
bloc. The idea of the cold war was a dance of ideals that brought new ways of
negotiations and bargain diplomacy. Two nations head-to-head gave rise to
nuclear war, which was now not only with the Soviet Union and USA, but also
other countries that were now influenced by ideals and ideas. The cold war
began in 1947 and lasted till 1991. This began the arms race in 1949. The only
way cold war could have ended war with war but, through coercive diplomacy
from Harry Truman (after consulting with his only secretary of state James F.
Byrne) to send Stalin an ultimatum, how could they win the war without
fighting? Well, it was with foreign policies on economics, political, social and
psychological that would strengthen their ideals and concerns over nation states.

. The mutual mistrust that was caused because of ideological conflict between
the USA and Soviet Union made traditional diplomacy difficult. Instead, they
resorted to coercive diplomacy against the Soviet Union. The pressure of
nuclear warfare led to a lot of pressure on both countries ' diplomacy and this
resulted in “HOT WARS DURING COLD WARS”. Due to the ongoing conflict
between two nation states, this led to the Cuban missile crisis, the chile conflict
and the nicaraguan conflict, a much lesser known conflict during the cold war.
Anatoly Dobrynin a soviet ambassador to the US and Robert Mcnamara, the
secretary of defence, had played a very major role in back channelling
discussions and negotiations that would mitigate the issue. This made
diplomacy an very important weapon in the present world that evolved into
being present in all aspects of communication between nation states. The
negotiation and an act of bargaining plays a vital role even in today's world, as
the cold war has channelled and paved the way for different types of diplomacy.
This Paper examines the use of diplomacy in a period where ideological
conflicts, nuclear tensions, and constant threat of war existed. To analyse the
strategies, tactics and personalities that were involved during the Cold War. To
study and understand main diplomatic events and areas such as Truman
doctrine, (SALT) Strategic arms limitation treaty, Cuban missile crisis, Berlin
Blockade, Cuban missile crisis and Proxy wars. Furthermore, it assesses the
impact of diplomacy, public propaganda and the evolution and usage of
Diplomacy at the global stage.
