KINDERGARTEN

WOLFARTSWEIER Kindergarten Wolfartsweier (die katze) is one of the most popular examples
of "duck" architecture. Conceptualized as a walk-in sculpture by Architect
Tomi Ungerer in collaboration with the Karlsruhe office of Yondel Zimmerlin
LITERATURE STUDY 1 Architects, this municipal daycare centre mimics a "cat in the stalking."
Location:
Functions:
Located in Karlsruhe, Germany.

It is one of two preschools in the

town, and is in the middle of a
residential suburb.

Form:
The 'cat' form mimics that of a
cat in stalking, 'watching over a
bird. The preschool compound
consists of the building itself, and
a playground, in which there is
a swingset with a bird sculpture
atop - sitting directly in front of the
'cat.'

The cat building includes a door

for a mouth below a whisker-lined
nose, windows for eyes, and a
classroom in its belly. For added
fun, kids can even ride down its
tail that doubles as a slide.

The building of the wolfartsweier

kindergarten has two floors and is
8.52 Metres high. It has a floor
area of 24.29 Meters of 19.73 Sources:
