Chapter 7 Climate

Formulas for Climate Data Table


1. Range of Temperature:
Maximum Temperature – Minimum Temperature (unit- oC)

2. Annual Temperature:
Add all the 12 months (unit- oC)

3. Annual Average Temperature:


Add all the 12 months and divide by 12 (Unit- oC)

4. Mean Annual Temperature:


Add all the 12 months and divide by 12 (Unit- oC)

5. Range of Temperature:
Highest – Lowest
• When range of temperature is more it is said to be extreme climate, which is,
Continental Climate
• When range of temperature is less it is said to be equable/ moderate climate,
which is, Maritime Climate

6. Lower Temperature- High Altitude (cold)


High Temperature- Sea Level (warm)

7. Hottest Month: Month that has the highest temperature.


Coldest Month: Month that has the lowest temperature.

8. Annual Rainfall:
Add all the 12 months (Unit- cms)

9. If the rainfall is more during June, July, August and September, the rainfall, received, is
from the SW monsoon winds.

10. If the rainfall is more during October and November, the rainfall received is from the
retreating monsoon winds.

11. If the rainfall is more during December, January and February, the rainfall received is
from the NE monsoon winds.
12. Wettest Month: The month having maximum rainfall.
Driest Month: The month having minimum rainfall.

13. If the range of temperature is low and maximum rainfall is the month of June, July,
August, September, then the station or places will be located (west coast)
Mumbai/ Panaji/ Kochi- cities
Maharashtra/ Goa/ Kerela- States

14. If the rainfall is high during December, January and February, the station or places will
be located – (East Coast)
Chennai/ Vishakhapatnam

15. If the question on the winds is asked, look at the rainfall. If maximum rainfall is during
October and November, then the rainfall received is from Retreating Monsoon Winds.
• If the maximum rainfall is during December, January and February, the rainfall
received is from North East monsoon winds.
• If the maximum rainfall is during June, July, August and September, then the rainfall
received is from South-East monsoon winds.
