Term 1 Portfolio: WHO GOT THE HIGHEST TEST SCORE Name_____________

Mr Men’s class was studying integers. Ava, Steven, Stacey & Jack are four of his students.
Below is each of the students’ answers to the test. Which student had the most correct answers?

Year 8 Integers Test Name: Ava Total: ___ / 8

𝟏𝟎 𝟑 𝟑𝟎
1. (-66) ÷ (-11) – 7 = 1 5. × =
𝟐𝟎 𝟒 𝟖𝟎

𝟕 𝟐 𝟏
2. 10 ÷ 5 – 2 x 7 = 16 6. − =
𝟏𝟎 𝟑 𝟑𝟎

𝟏𝟓 𝟕 𝟕𝟓
3. -3 x (-2 + 5) – 1 = -20 7. + =
𝟓𝟎 𝟓 𝟑𝟓𝟎

𝟏 𝟏 𝟔 𝟏𝟒
4. 10 – 2 x -5 + 4 = 4 8. + × =
𝟕 𝟐 𝟕 𝟓𝟒

Below show your answers to the 8 questions from the test. All working out must be shown!

1. (-66) ÷ (-11) – 7 = 𝟏𝟎 𝟑
5. × =
𝟐𝟎 𝟒
=6-7
= -1 = 10/20 + (3/4 x 5/5)
= 10/20 + 15/20
=25/20
= 1 and 5/20
= 1 and 1/4
2. 10 ÷ 5 – 2 x 7 = 𝟕 𝟐
6. − =
𝟏𝟎 𝟑
=2 - (2 x 7)
= (7/10 x 3/3)+(2/3 x 10/10)
=2 - 14
=21/30 + 20/30
=-12
= 41/30
= 1 and 11/30

𝟏𝟓 𝟕
3. -3 x (-2 + 5) – 1 = 7. + =
𝟓𝟎 𝟓

= -3 x (3) -1 = 15/50 + (7/5 x 10/10)

= -9 -1 = 15/50 + 70/50
=-10 = 85/50
= 1 and 35/50
= 1 and 7/10

𝟏 𝟏 𝟔
4. 10 – 2 x -5 + 4 = 8. + × =
𝟕 𝟐 𝟕
= 10 - (-10) + 4
=20 + 4 = 1/7 + (1/2 x 6/7)
= 24 = 1/7 +6/14
= 2/14 + 6/14
= 8/14
=4/7
Looking at the four students’ tests can you identify the misconceptions in their incorrect answers. In writing state what
they did incorrectly to get their answers. All working out must be shown!

Ava’s Misconceptions/Mistakes Steven’s Misconceptions/Mistakes

1) Ava forgot to take in account
the negative signs when dividing
-66 by -11, which should have
been 6, rather than -6.

2)Ava added the two halves of

the equation rather than
subtracting it.

3)Ava expanded the brackets,

took 6 as -6, and added it to -15,
to get -21. Then she subtracted -
1 from the answer, rather than
adding it on the negative side to
get the answer of the equation.
