Subject: Mathematics X
Activity Type: Skills: Exercises/Drill Control No. : 9
Activity Title: POLYNOMIAL EQUATION
Learning Competency: Illustrates polynomial equations
Learning Target/s: 1. To find all real solutions of polynomial equation
Reference/s: Our World of Math 10
Author: Jose Rosario, et. al

Concept Notes
Example: 2x4 – 7x3 – 6x2 + 26x – 12 = 0
1 3
Solution: Since the leading coefficient is 2 and the constant term is -12, the possible rational solutions are ± , ± , ± 1
2 2
3
±2, ± 3, ± 4, ± 6, and ± 12. Using synthetic division, we see that the only rational solutions are and -2, and 2x4 – 7x3 –
2
6x2 + 26x – 12 = (x +2)(2x – 3)(x2 – 4x + 2). Using the quadratic formula for the third factor, we have
−(−4 ) ± √ (−4)2−4 ( 1 ) (2)
x=
2(1)
4 ± √ 16−8
x=
2
4 ± 2 √2
x=
2
X = 2 ± √2
3
Thus, the real solution of the polynomial equation, 2x4 – 7x3 – 6x2 + 26x – 12 = 0 are , -2, 2 + √ 2
