PROJECT

1. PROJECT BRIEF

Background:
Waste management in South Africa

Project Activities:
The South African government has been working on developing and implementing a National
Waste Management Strategy to address key issues in waste management, including recycling,
landfill management, and public awareness. Various recycling initiatives and programs aim to
increase recycling rates and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. These initiatives may
involve partnerships with local communities, businesses, and NGOs. Efforts to improve
landfill management practices, closure of illegal dumpsites, and rehabilitation of degraded
areas continue to be part of waste management activities in South Africa.

QUESTION
Conduct a comprehensive study on the waste management practices at eThekwini municipality
in South Africa. Evaluate the efficiency of waste collection, recycling initiatives, and landfill
management. Provide recommendations for improvement based on your findings.

2. GUIDELINE FOR WRITING YOUR PROJECT REPORT:

The technical project report must be typed and not more than 8 pages long.
The following format must be adhered to:

 Clearly state any assumptions made and cite all references.

 Any theoretical discussions must be concise and use bullet format (short lines of
detailed information)
 Your report, properly indexed, should include the following:
o All relevant design criteria used and the source of such criteria fully referenced.
o Design calculations for all unit processes
o Appropriate computer output prints included in your report as annexure, clearly
indicating software used and all information clearly marked and indexed where
necessary.
o You must furthermore discuss the impact of the project on other Engineering
Disciplines, as well as the impact of other Engineering Disciplines on the
project.

Take note of the following:

1. Title page
As short as possible but it must have to state the object of the project clearly. All
bibliographic
information (name, student number, subject, year, etc.).
2. Index
Remember to label the pages of the project report.
3. Introduction
Theoretical background. Report on the theoretical basis of your investigation (consult the
literature).
4. Waste collection, Recycling initiatives, Landfill problems at eThekwini Municipality
5. Discussion
In the discussion section the following should be included:
Relate your results back to the introduction and previous literature.
o Explain how your findings fit in with theory.
o Interpret your findings.
o Recommend or suggest applications of your findings.

6. Conclusion

references used.
The HARVARD METHOD must be used to refer to sources (see Burger, 1992).
